| NDP candidate not giving up passwords
NDP MLA candidate Nicholas Simons is asked by the party to hand over his social media passwords. An outrageous attempt to invade his privacy. Quote:
Social media is a great place for friends and families to connect and build a virtual relationship. You give, take, listen, and even sometimes get personal. But what if all the photos you have shared, notes you have written, personal Facebook messages you have written were to be handed over to a stranger?
Current NDP MLA candidate Nicholas Simons for Powell River/Sunshine Coast has been requested by the party to hand over his social media passwords.
Because of the sensitivity of request, Simon is refusing to comply despite NDP trying to obtain the password. However, NDP’s request to obtain personal information for social media accounts are not without merit as an incident in 2009 forced Vancouver-False Creek former MLA candidate Ray Lam to withdraw from election. Ray Lam, former NDP candidate is seen palming a women's breast
BC NDP candidate Ray Lam resigned in 2009 after his racy Facebook pictures surfaced. The photo showed Ray palming a women’s breast. This incident undoubtedly embarrassed the party and it appears NDP is looking to prevent such incident from occurring. However, is obtaining social media passwords to candidates an invasion of privacy?

and here http://www.straight.com/article-3769...asswords-party Under the Personal Information Protection Act, an organization (including the B.C. NDP) "must develop and follow policies and practices" that meet the provisions of the act, as well as develop a process to respond to complaints that may arise.
Section 6 of the act states that an organization must not collect, use, or disclose information without a person's consent.

i think its ridiculous how employers are heading towards demanding to know every little thing about you, nothing is private anymore... if they could they'd probably want to install cameras in your home to see how you act
and because finding a job is getting harder and harder with globalization people are allowing it

Just what are they going to do with the passwords though? Remove provocative pictures and comments? Regulate the number of friends who have more than revealing profile pictures? Post anti-Liberal comments on his status feed?
It's a damn shame when organizations cross the line to protect their own interests--not knowing exactly what their interests may be.

No they're going through your history to make sure you don't have anything naughty in your back ground.
It's absolutely insane that they do it though. If they can't trust their candidates on facebook how can they trust them to run the province?

Here is an interesting thought for the NDP. How about only having candidates who would not do the type of things you want to hide and cover up till after the election? Did anyone there think about that or does your "gene pool" not contain those types of people? You appear to be more concerned about getting caught than you are in having someone who would not do what you want to cover up.

taking digs @ the ndp and the character of their candidates is rather stupid
everyone is moving towards wanting to know more and more about their employees (which is what a candidate for a party essentially is)
the invasion of privacy that the world is in/headed to is the bigger story here, take your partisan bs out
take this example, new west kids soccer leagues have been demanding that anyone offering to coach the kids (volunteer, parent job) have to give their finger prints/dna sample to the league
a criminal record check isn't good enough....? and the prints/etc aren't destroyed after the check (got this from an acquaintance who had to go through it)
just a further example of how the notion of privacy is disappearing and its accepted because of the subject matter (kids) but when you start knocking pieces off the wall eventually it'll collapse entirely

There's already been a case in Maryland where an employer has required the prospective employee to submit his/her facebook password.
Hearing stuff like this makes me glad I don't have a facebook account

I never understood all the controversy over that photo.
Who cares if he's gay or she's ugly. If she had no problem with the boob-grab (consensual) then why does the public care?
I sure don't care.

Employers certainly are not justified in asking for information such as passwords to Facebook and whatnot but depending on your job it should be expected that what you post on these sites is in line with your companies values, morals, etc.
Some friends have pictures of them doing blow or smoking weed on facebook but all they do is work at dead end jobs. Would be entirely different if they were real estate agents with an advertisement on every bus station bench.
Exposing people to what you do outside of work will make them judge you so it can no longer be acceptable to say work is work and what I do outside of work is my own business as long as I perform well. What should your employer think when every album you post up is full of club, drunk, doing stupid things pictures.

The thing about facebook is the user is pretty much in control. If they are tagged in a picture with a giant joint hanging out of their mouth and they dont want people seeing that they can and should untag themselves. I've even gone as far to call someone and tell them to take the picture of me with a can full of gas and a burning ______ in the back ground off their album.
