Is it worth switching my collision coverage?

Hey guys,
I have an 02 RSX-S and needs body work due to a hit and run. My deductible right now is at $1000. When I went for quotes at Checkpoint and Bismark, both quoted around 800$. I have to renew my insurance in April. So, will it be better for me to change my coverage so that I have $500 deductible (for 3 months) or just pay out of my pocket? Could use your input. Thanks.

Mancini 03-10-2011 08:02 AM

The deductible that was in effect at the time the damage occurred is the one that will apply. Changing your deductible after the fact won't have any effect on this incident.

How do they know if I haven't reported it though?

TheNewGirl 03-10-2011 08:16 AM

They will only cover you if you have a police report for the hit and run. And that date will be referanced to your coverage at that time.

civic_rice 03-10-2011 08:16 AM

Its called fraud and WHEN icbc finds out you switch your deductable and claim this, your entire insurance will be void

lies, then is charged with fraud when ICBC catches him.

Ok so if this car was under someone else's insurance that had 500$ deductible at the time of the incident and they "did" report it and got an estimate, do I pay $500?

Paying $300>Criminal Charges.

InvisibleSoul 03-10-2011 09:06 AM

$1000 deductible? Wow... didn't even know such an option existed.

Now you want to involve someone else in activity that can result in criminal charges?

Don't try to thieve your way into a valid claim. Just pay the $800 repair like a half-decent human being and be done with it.

I bought this car 2 months ago and it already had the damage due to the accident. I did not get it fixed on the owner's expense but rather opted to pay him less. (I was under the impression that I could get it fixed if i get the same coverage as he did). I'm rechecking the carfax right now and it does show the collision estimate with the date and amount. His insurance coverage had $500 deducible but mine has $1000. The estimate provided shows $635 on the paper but the two shops I want it to be fixed at quoted me $800.
I can get it fixed elsewhere for below $500 but I didn't know about these two shops before I joined RS. If I have to pay on my own, I can wait a bit to get that done but since my insurance renewal is coming soon, I was curious if I had to change my plan.

Mancini 03-10-2011 09:44 AM

If he made a claim (but never completed the repairs) it may still be possible to take action under that claim. I'm not sure.

This will not get fixed under your own coverage, whether past, present or future. Not if you're being honest.

I would contact ICBC and ask them if it's possible to perform the repairs under his original coverage. If not, you already opted to pay him less due to the damage. It's on your dime at that point.

This is on the line of what I wanted to know. So, changing the coverage won't do anything for me. Since ICBC already knows that my car had the damages from previous owner, I can't lie about the incident anyways. I'll take ur advice and call them up to hear what they have to say. Meanwhile, I'll look for quotes from other shops too. Thanks.

TheNewGirl 03-10-2011 10:24 AM

You bought a car knowing it's damaged, got a deal on it because it was damaged, and now you want ICBC to pay for the rest?

THIS is why we pay the insane rates we do.

You bought the car knowing you would have to repair it. Just do it.

I guess it was a bad decision on my part. I had the option to get it fixed for $500 or pay him $500 less. I was in a hurry to get the car for work, so I took it on my own to fix it. After recommendation from the guys here, I chose those two shops and their estimate is almost double including the tax.
If ICBC had already agreed on paying the amount shown on estimate, I thought I could at least give it a try. Didn't know I could be increasing your insurance rate in process. Sorry.

FerrariEnzo 03-10-2011 11:57 AM

if you when and got a deal on the car from its previous owner, by not look for a shop that does cash repairs and avoid taxes... you can get it done for cheaper...

** but but beware of the consequences ** they might do a half ass job knowing thats its a cash job..

if i were you, id sell it as is to someone else and bit the loses or just repair it out of your pocket!! i would avoid claiming, your rates would go up like a MOFO!

Nlkko 03-10-2011 12:18 PM

If you're paying out of the pocket find the solo guys (a few in Surrey) who don't have the expenses that the regular shops do. They're a whole lot cheaper (40%-50%) and still do quality work.

Do your homework and ask to see previous work though.

Incorrect. It's already been mentioned that he can't claim this under his insurance, so his rates will not go up.

I believe $2500 is the max you can get. $1000+ deductibles are more for companys with fleet vehicles. Not sure why any one person would get a $1000 deductible.

No once the car is sold the claim is void, unless you have the paperwork for the claim and signed off on it as the original owner. But like everyone else said in this thread that would be fraud once agani.

asahai69 03-10-2011 12:42 PM

damn your cheap as shit. you should have atleast $500 deductible

RiceIntegraRS 03-10-2011 01:10 PM

So u got quoted $800 and ur paying minimum $500 for the deductible. And ur risking fraud cause ur too cheap to shell out $300. I say do it cause it makes perfect sense to me

pay for it out of your pocket now to prevent any possibly fraud charges.

switch insurance plan to a $300 deductible for a next time. Trust me, it is worth it!

i've had friends with their whole car keyed and windows smashed and $1000 is still a lot.

I've had my car keyed before, and 1 hit and run right after my car got back from the body shop. $300 deductibles save your ass!
