Can't decide on a vehicle
 

Hey guys, having a tough time deciding on a truck. I am torn between a Ford F-150 Platinum and a Toyota Tundra Platinum.

Both trucks have everything I need / want:

- 4x4 Crew cab
- Heated and cooled leather seats
- Moonroof
- Navigation / passable stereos

I am mainly using this as a daily driver with limited use of the box. Probably carry tools around, nothing major. They will both be more than capable of towing the small trailer and to do some limited off-road driving. Majority of my driving is on highways.


Toyota Tundra Pros:
- Ride is superior, both engine and transmission are nicer, smooth
- More room all around in both the front and the back
- Centre console can fit files / folder hangers and a 15" laptop
- Quieter ride, road noise is less noticeable than the Ford

Cons:
- With this revision having come out in 2007, 2013 is probably going to be a complete revamp of the truck

Ford F-150 Pros:
- Engine hasn't changed much in the last 10 years
- Heated rear seats
- Sync, as hyped as it is, is pretty handy
- Built tough, frame is rigid
Cons:
- Engine hasn't changed much in the last 10 years
- Sluggish transmission

Right now I am leaning towards the Toyota, but I am a little worried about buying one now and having an announcement in 18 months of a complete redesign. But, I guess that's just life with technology. They both are fairly competitively priced ($60,000 give and take), with the Ford being one to two thousand dollars cheaper.

for trucks either get toyota or ram.

the tundra has fuckin crazy power. My buddy got a f150 4months ago and hes been going to the dealership to fix random things like 4-5 times. Ford says they increased in reliability but i dont buy it. Toyota is known for reliability and imo it looks 10000000x better than ford.

and the pros you mentioned towards the tundra seem way more practical than the ones mentioned towards the ford.

also do you have to buy new??? there's quite a few used tundras down in Washington which will save you some money if you import it over...as well as it might not be that big of a "hit" on your ?ego? when the new one comes out knowing you just purchased an "old" one for 60k...

Having driven different trims of Tundra and just looking at the pics of the F-150 interior, the one in the Tundra is much better laid out and looks less busy than the F-150's. And I agree with ruthless, there's not much difference between a 2007 Tundra and the 2010's, save a couple of interior pieces here and there. Maybe you could save a lot more money getting used, and still end up with the same truck.

Although the ford have better styling and interior, I would get the Tundra for its reliability and be more worry-free.

I'm surprised you haven't considered a Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel!

Right now I'm sitting at about 70/30 in favor of the Tundra. But with it being in it's 5th year of model life, it kind of worries me. As asked, I pretty well have to buy new. I live and work in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The winters here are brutal, and I don't want to rely on a previously owned truck. I don't want the risk of a vehicle not starting every time or breaking down on the side of the road at -45 degree temperatures. As for a Cummings, they are a great engine, probably the best one out there by a country mile, but a diesel engine up here is only really good if you don't mind leaving it running 24/7 when it's cold as well. Can't afford to have the diesel gel or sludge up on me if I can't get anywhere to plug it in. Also, if I were to buy a diesel I would buy a Duramax. The Alison transmission alone is worth it's weight in gold. I could care less about power, I'm all about ride, suspension, and road noise.

I sure hope the new redesign includes a toyota diesel :)

I think it does. If it's anything like the lx, you get very comfortable cruising (downshifts/upshifts smoothly, no jerkiness), and sounds pretty beastly at WOT. Ontop of that it's fairly reliable and the tiptronic feature isn't as bad as in some other Trucks.

Also correct me if I'm wrong, but those trucks hold their value much better than the F-150. Tough decision, they're both really nice.

I had a 2004 F150 and a 2008 both lariats, drove them both for 3 years. Never had an issue with either of them, great trucks and full of options. My father in law has a Tundra, beautiful truck.

If money isn't an issue I would probably get the Toyota just because I really like them, I never had a choice as we were leasing Fords. If you're not using the box or towing large trailers I wouldn't recommend buying a truck the gas cost is ridiculous. I drove a lot using mine for work but my monthly gas bill was $800-1400 a month depending on gas prices.

Uncle has a Tundra.. I think that's my dream truck.

imo, toyota is good and reliable but the recent recall kinda make me disapponted

Do they have a Toyota dealer in Ft.Mac? I'm sure there's going to be a Ford dealer close by. I'm just thinking about the servicing aspect of it.

When my friend was working in Hay River he bought a Ford cause all the other dealers were in Grand Prairie or Edmonton.

F-150 has all new engines, the 5.0 v8 is brand new, and of course there is the 3.5 turbo which would be my choice. Tons of power and way better fuel economy than a v8

I'd take the F150 with the ecoboost (if you can even source one)..

personally i'd never consider an import when buying a full-sized truck, the only toyota i'd buy would probably be a Tacoma, and i dont see myself every buying a "small" truck like those

ive driven/rode in the platinum F150 many times, very comfortable ride and very quiet interior, the retractable running boards are cool too :P
