| hydro bill for condos
I just got a bill from BC hydro that has a charge of $259.00 (based on a 2 month cycle). I find this unusual because i previously lived in a much larger condo and my bill was only at around $50 per month. I find this highly unusual because my friend owns a house and his bill only comes out to $60 per month and i live in a condo that is much smaller and im not even around most of the time. the only thing turned on 24/7 is the heater at a steady 18 degrees.
any advice?

my building pays for heating with the strata fees. i also have a gas stove/oven. i pay $18 to hydro a month for a 1 bedroom. your does seem steep.

I have a condo, we have individual hotwater tanks so I have that, stove, fridge, electric heating. I pay about $40/month in the summer and about $85 in the winter.
Some people seem low because they're on Equal Payment Plans and end up having to pay a large catch up once a year. Is that what your large bill is? If it's not you can ask them to come down and physically re read the meter and re assess you, I had to this once when they over charged me.
Your Electric Heater though... it sucks heat like nothing else in your house. Leave it off when you're not home.

I live in a 1000sq/ft condo. I'm on equal payment plan set at $35. Summer time im around $20, and through out this Winter its jumped to $50-$60. I have electric heat on for a few hours a day. $130/month is pretty damn steep. I normally crank my to 25c for an hour, and then turn it off.

hmm... i have my electric heater (baseboard) crank to 20c 24/7. i do not turn it off or anything. could that dramatically boost my energy usage and make the bill more justifiable?

Leaving a single electric heater on uses as much power as leaving 7-10 computers on.

My coworker pays about the same. He shit a brick last time and BC Hydro confirmed all the units in his building were paying more or less the same.

your electric heater could be a problem if your place is cold (i live in a condo and i dont even need to use a heater, it's 23C all the time! kinda hot).
my old place had an electrical heater. during the winter months my bill would be like 125 bucks for 2 months. summer months it would be 30 bucks for 2 months.
so yeah, your electric heater could be the main source. i got a heat dish for my old place cuz electrical heaters are just too god damn expensive.

New condo? Steel and concrete? Lots of windows? There is many reasons why your bill could be sky high. Did you just move in? They could also be averaging, so depending what the last owner/tenant used will determine your bill. Call BC Hydro.
