Start 'er up and drive away. in the lower mainland you'll never have -39c prairie-like temps with those 80 to 120 km winds... I'm currently living in Blairmore Alberta and winter here is freakin cold and long! We warm up our vehicles as long as a 1/2 hour while we have coffee in the morning lol!

Reminds me of the time when I lived in Winnipeg. We had temp go down to -55 w/ windchill. The coldest I was able to start my jeep was -45 without having the block heater plugged in, of course it took a few tires of cranking it over, and running synthetic oil made the difference.

For those who are concerned about warming up the engine, you can plug in the block heater, and that will warm up the engine block up to 30F over the ambient temp. If you want the inside to heat up, then you can get a interior heater from crappy. From what I remember they are 900watts, and get your interior warm enough that when you enter your car in the morning you won't have the immediate need to turn on the heat.

I had come across a study where someone found that plugging in the block heater for 3 hours in the morning was more cost effective than starting up and driving off on a cold engine, since the engine sucks down considerably more fuel when it's cold.
