Takes 10 seconds not even.

i don't understand this... technically, they can still steal stuff in the trunk because they can break your windows, and open the trunk from the inside.

domco 04-10-2011 07:08 PM

Yeah they can steal the stuff in the trunk but there's a possibility that there's nothing there or its a bunch of crap.

as I mentioned earlier, the truck release in newer cars are disabled if the car is armed, so the trunk will not open.

@OP not sure if tracking down the ipad is gonna do much good. Honestly it has probably been sold already, at least one time. By the end of the week it might have been sold again. Even if you find that someone has it, you can't just take it from them just because you were the original owner, like someone already posted it is a whole new can of worms.

My trunk's interior switch can be deactivated and then locked in the deactivated position. To open the trunk you must either use the keyfob/remote or unlock the switch.
Good feature really, I don't see why this isn't standard in all cars with a proper trunk

At least by giving police the serial number you have given yourself some chance to have it returned, most people don't have serial numbers for their property recorded. Without a serial number recorded it is very hard to identify items as stolen property (in the eyes of the law at least) and to determine an owner to return the stolen property to.

Best advice for everyone here is to never leave anything in your car that you are willing to part with, even if you're only going into a store for a minute or two.

What a shitty world we live in right now. I remember being able to leave your doors unlocked in the summer months, and when you forgot to lock your car doors you stuff remained inside.

highfive 04-11-2011 09:22 AM

That fucking sucks. Did you park at that dark parking lot of bamboo grove?

ImpactZ 04-11-2011 09:30 AM

if they were cautious, they could replace the ipad casing, so the serial number would no longer be there (plenty avail on ebay)

Phat_R 04-11-2011 09:58 AM

Lesson learned -- don't leave valuables in your car

I think the only way you can track your iPad is if you have MobileMe installed -- otherwise you're screwed

Psykopathik 04-11-2011 03:06 PM

know what? some worthless fuck broke into my company's truck when i drove it to Home Depot. yup right by a skytrain station. broke in took NOTHING. there was nothing in the truck nor anything even hinting there was anything worth taking. $500 deductable.

3klipze 04-11-2011 03:45 PM

I kind of blame the canada line, it brings more people over to richmond , you see more bums in richmond lingering around the streets too.

Volvoman 04-11-2011 03:49 PM

Like all the bums sleeping at the ATMs at night. Can't even take out cash...

MG1 04-11-2011 04:18 PM

Since some of you are so freakin' bored, why not set up a sting operation? Get a member to drive to a parking lot in Richmond and bring out a fake/broken/shitty laptop, flash it around, and move it to the trunk. Wait for the thieves to show up and nab them. Take them to secluded place and beat the living snot out of them. There you go, something fun to do on a Sunday night, LOLOLOLOLOL.

If you do this every Sunday for the next 50 years, you will get rid of maybe 2% of all thieves out there. Sad, ain't it?

AzNightmare 04-11-2011 05:03 PM

Sucks to hear this. Just about a month ago in Richmond, my friend's window got smashed and gps stolen,
cause he mistakenly left his gps holder suction cupped on the windshield.
Said he's been doing that for years without any problem, but I guess it only needs to happen once.

I personally use my glove compartment and lock it if it's important.
Since I have a hatchback, the trunk can be accessed by pulling down the backseats anyway.

Honestly though, this just sounds like bad luck.
If your bag was hidden, and no one knew about the iPad, then maybe they just target your car cause it's a higher end car?

YK86 04-11-2011 05:29 PM

Newer cars are a bit different but 2000 and older cars (especially Hondas and Acuras), I would never leave anything in the car. Even the holder for gps or the charger for the Ipod is hidden/out of site as leaving it out may give the thief the idea the gps unit or ipod may be somewhere hidden in the car. Better safe than sorry.

The trunk lever "locks" are just a dinky tab and can easily be bent. The glove boxes can also be pried open leaving you with an f'ed up dash assembly that now needs replacing so none of those things really comfort me especially since it's happened to me. The lever lock isn't bad but replacing the dash is not fun.

And I'm sure the OP doesn't really need anyone telling him he should have taken it with him as he's the guy feeling the worst right now.

MG1 04-11-2011 09:32 PM

Anything to slow down the thieves. On my old Civic, I disabled the hatch release and added an aftermarket trunk release/lock. Even disabled the key lock on the hatch. I unscrewed the seat release. Not easy to get in the hatch. Thieves will not hang around long when an alarm is going off. Not only that, I had pain generators installed in the car - the ones that cause one to vomit, pass out, and make ears bleed. If they try to take the deck, there's um razor blades attached to it. Hee hee.................. it was an old Civic, so blood here and there on the carpet and whatnot would not suck knowing how much the thief suffers for messing with my ride.

MG1 04-11-2011 09:32 PM

Ooooooooo......... look what I found.

Somewhat realted. Not sure if something like this is available for iPads.

www.me.com

Locate it with this, if you have your apple ID and it was used on your ipad2. only works if the other that stole it has it turned on

FUCK my brother just got back and his friend's car just got broken into. Stole 3 laptops. It was in Richmond too. Outside in the lot at Ebisu on No 3.

They were out studying hence the laptops. 2 of them were ours too.

TD on Cambie and 41st. Saw a bum sleeping inside the ATM room a few times. I had to go to another TD in the end.

There's always this one guy on Marine and Cambie, in the left turn lanes asking for change. There's also another guy on Cambie and 41st doing the same thing. The Canada Line does seem to bring more homeless people to these area.
