car got broken into over the weekend

my car got broken into over the weekend:(
they stole my work bag that had an Ipad2 in it. I had it in my bag and put the bag on the floor in the back seat behind tinted windows. Sucks balls

anyways i was wondering if anyone knows if apple is able to help track it or locate it, theres alot of files on it that i need for work.

any help would be great.

MG1 04-10-2011 11:45 AM

Apple can do it, but they won't track it. At least that has been the case up to this point. If they started doing that, it would open up a huge can of worms. There was a thread on RS about a computer geek that tracked his Macbook down. Perhaps another RS member can find the thread.

I gather you didn't back up your important files. More details on who, what, where, when, and why the iPad2 was left in the car? No alarm? Did anyone see you with the iPad?

lundyt 04-10-2011 11:48 AM

just got the ipad about 3 weeks ago so didnt think about having the need to back it up quite yet. I was having dinner at bamboo grove on 3 and granville in richmond, parked behind the restraunt. They broke the window and reached in and grabbed the bag. Its a stock alarm system which doesnt go off until the door is open. Pretty dumb, this happened on Friday between 730 pm to 930 pm. Finished dinner went back to my car to drive my grandparents home and realized the window was broken.

Good luck finding your stuff.

Maybe next time you won't leave valuables in the car though.

Spooling 04-10-2011 11:55 AM

thieves deserve to have their hands cut off
and there are many of them in Richmond now

Greenstoner 04-10-2011 11:55 AM

A while back, coming out of Richmond Center, I noticed a guy creeping around my car, and sure enough he was trying to get in. This was at like 4pm in broad daylight, blew my mind. Ever since then, I never leave any bags/valuables in sight, always just throw it into the trunk. Takes 20 seconds, especially when you have something expensive in your bag.

Keep an eye out for cheap/stolen ipads on CL i suppose, sorry for your loss.

observer 04-10-2011 12:36 PM

Do you have find my iphone activated?

lundyt 04-10-2011 12:49 PM

guess i should throw the specifics of the ipad out there
64 gig
black

doesn't really help if they see you put the valuables in the trunk. if thieves see you park your car and then put something in the trunk, that's an automatic sign to them that it's something you value. put the items in the trunk BEFORE you get to your destination or, better yet, don't leave any valuables in the trunk at all.

as well, whenever you buy something expensive, make note of the serial number of the item. should the police retrieve the item from the thief or pawnshop or etc, they can then return the item back to you. if no serial number is provided with the theft report, it's a much longer process (sometimes impossible) to match your stolen property with the recovered items.

if you have mobile me then you can track it.
but, i doubt you have it.

If it is a sedan, a trunk should help as most higher end OEM alarms will disable the trunk release if the car is armed.

that may be, but would you rather your car be a target at all? let some other sap's car be a target. let them be the ones to make the icbc claim. don't tempt the thieves at all.

lundyt 04-10-2011 02:23 PM

I gave the cops the serial already

I drive an escalade so there is really no trunk just thot the tinted windows would be enough to mask the black bag on the floor. Rookie mistake

well find my ipad feature is available and it will pin point approximately where it is when it gets connected to wifi signal or has 3G signal.
having said that, I better activate that on my ipad 2 as well...

Mananetwork 04-10-2011 03:28 PM

Ouch! I've never had my shit stolen or have someone break into my car. Richmond just got another minus point

Hope these guys get caught!

Gary Oak 04-10-2011 03:47 PM

just advice for next time, always put anything that you think might get stolen in the trunk.
Takes 10 seconds not even.

dachinesedude 04-10-2011 04:29 PM

consider this a lesson learned

never put any valuables in the car, visible or not

I had work that day and couldn't drop it off at home back in Burnaby. I never leave anything but I couldn't do anything with mine at the time.
