yea that's true, so it's partially my fault but it is a bank after all. Who would think a bank would give out counterfeit bills..

What to do if

... you are in possession of a counterfeit note or a suspected counterfeit note?

If you think that you have detected a counterfeit note, you should, if possible:

* Keep the note and record all relevant information (denomination, serial number, etc.).
* Record the details on how you received the note: time, context, description of the person who gave you the note, description of any accomplices, vehicle license plate number, etc.
* Contact your local police.
* Give the note to the police. Ask for a receipt. The note will be returned to you if it is determined to be genuine by the Bureau for Counterfeit and Document Examinations.

no man they were fake - as i said before it was a combo of the UV print missing AND the way the denomination was put onto the strip.

From what I been told is a safe bet would be to ask the clerk to verify the $500 (example) if its legal tender. They do have machines that verify it...UV blacklight currency scanner (I bought one too for my work place).

Most of the time, its extra work for them but just nicely say that you are worried about getting counterfeit bills and has happen to you before and just want to play it safe.

But of course, if they dont comply then simply ask the Manager for recourse

Honestly, when the OP's father called head office and filed a complaint or a formal resolution, I think thats a good idea.
If this happened to me, I would just talk to the upstairs branch manager and sit down and discuss matter calmly. Try not to throw words out at the front teller desk since other ppl might overhear and think poorly of the bank.
Instead ask if we can talk quietly in a small room/office and bring up that its no ones fault (might have been a mix up somewhere in past transaction) and would like to get it resolve.

Remember, no one likes to admit fault so just resolve peacefully (hopefully :) )

its an innocent mistake. you might think a bank is perfect, but it's ordinary people working at a bank after all. So the money that they give out is money that they get in also. So even if that money has been through many hands, but a counterfeit will have a chance to slip through and gets circulated back out to the public... just take it as an unfortunate situation and move on...

Next time take them out in 20s just to be safe. Most places dont check if 20s are fake or not so shouldnt be a problem. I know it doesnt solve the problem but what can you do, right?

Those fake toonies look like a lot of work for little reward.

The more you make the lower the actual cost will be per toonie.

That's true... who checks bills that they get from the bank? I know I certainly don't. I was also under the impression that the bank is one place you wouldn't get counterfeits from... but I guess now I'll be thinking twice about that.

Can the people that are saying "banks should know better not to give out counterfeit bills" shut the fuck up?

This was a coincidence...it easily could've happened at ANY other bank/branch. Hundreds...maybe thousands of bills are depoisited each day, there easily could've been a counterfeit that slipped by. They don't have time to check each piece of paper that gets deposited.
