Knight & King Edward TD Bank giving out counterfeit money?

Well its hard to believe but it happened to me on april 14. I didnt realize that the $100 they gave me was fake until today. I took out $500 and asked for (5) 100 bills on thursday april 14th. They counted it right in front of me and i have never heard of banks giving fake money so i trusted them. Anyways today i went back to the bank and asked if my $100 bill was fake because the gas station wouldnt accept it. The teller said yes and also stated that there were two fake 100 bills given out recently from their branch. Then i told her my story and she went to speak with the manager. The manager did not believe that i withdrew the money from them until i showed them the receipt. Even so, she denied that it was their fault and stated that when they count the money for us, it is our resposiblity to check if they are fake. I was really pissed off at that time and started to raise my voice because they are a bank shouldnt they be checking for counterfeit money before passing them on to other people? She even denied that 2 counterfeit bills were given out recently and said we probably misheard even when i had a friend beside me who heard the same thing. Anyways after minutes of arguing, they talked with the head manager and i got my $100 back. After that when i got home, i and told my parents what happened. Immediately they called the TD branch and they hung up after my dad mentioned about the them illegally passing out counterfeit money.

What was the point of your dad calling? Why piss them off more? You got your money replaced and the educated thing to do was to email their head office and tell them the situation. That way there can be an internal review done.

Anjew 04-21-2011 03:09 PM

of course TD would not want to admit they handed out counterfeit bills or it'll be the end of them....

What would you guys have done if this ever happened to you? i know i probably shouldnt have raised my voice, but i couldnt think of any other option. The manager kept saying it is my fault because i should have been more responsible and checked if they were fake before taking them.

if you have a issue talk to the BBB and CTV news as well. They love hearing stories like that. Especially since news has been fairly slow these days.

optiblue 04-21-2011 03:31 PM

some bills nowadays look very real!

CP.AR 04-21-2011 03:40 PM

^ tell me about it.
I got ripped off on a Craigslist deal gone bad.

got some fake bills even the local RCMP detatchment thought was real (2 constables checked them with touch + look) until they put it under a black /UV light

xilley 04-21-2011 05:20 PM

when i was selling my phone a while back
a white guy and a brown guy both called about it
met up with one, handed me fake cash and i threat to call the cops , the white guys ran away with his gf
then a brown dude, didnt even take his fake coutnerfeits and just walked away
HAHAHA then after the counterfiets were used as filters hehehe

Groot 04-21-2011 05:23 PM

he walked away cause he shat bricks LOL

rawr 04-21-2011 06:28 PM

That's weird, I always thought the machines they draw cash from was able to tell the difference between legit and counterfeit bills...

cunninglinguist 04-21-2011 07:48 PM

I never seen a fake before. What gave this bill away?

gas station attendant prolly ran it under UV light and there probably was no illumination
best bet is that one of the tellers were lazy and didnt bother to check the bills they got
side bet TD is a sham :troll:

On the topic of fakes...I've received a few fake $10 bills in the last couple of weeks. The average person wouldn't know it's a fake bill but the biggest thing missing on the bills I received was the hologram strip that runs down the bill was missing.

CP.AR 04-21-2011 09:36 PM

^ on my fake 100s they had the hologram strip which changed to multiple colours, the microprint, the braille/bumps, the twopiece "100" on front and back (that lined up to make 100 when you shine it through) and the watermark when you put it up against the sun.

Only thing that was wrong was the UV and "removable" hairs on the bill
hell even the paper felt real.... for a while

The 1st batch of "new" 10s didn't have the holograms btw... but they should have pretty much been all phased out by now since stores were told to keep them and turn it into the bank to exchange for the ones with the stripe

I think some legit $10 bills don't have the hologram strip that runs down the bill.

Oh, I didn't know that.

Yah, some of the fake bills are really good and really hard to tell if their fake.

Now I don't know what happened here, and mistakes happen from time to time but one detail jumps out at me.

Were you in sight of the hundred dollar bill at all times when you handed it over to the gas station attendant?

I don't want to brandish all gas stations as crooks, but theres been quite a lot of cases where gas stations were skimming cards, etc.

flawless 04-21-2011 10:07 PM

^The first batch of $5s and $10s didn't have a hologram strip running down it.

BorLorBao 04-21-2011 10:15 PM

It does happen. I have a habit of checking every bill I get whether it is from atm, teller, cashiers or anyone. A lot of people are not aware that they get fake bills. They just take the money and go and when they try to use it somewhere else then they find out it is fake when it is not accepted. It only takes me a quick feel with my thumb to check a bill.

rslater 04-21-2011 10:42 PM

Happened at RBC with me. Took out $4000 in $100's and went to deposit it at another bank and one of them was fake.

What did the RCMP do? Did you get your money or item back?

CP.AR 04-21-2011 11:18 PM

^

of course they had to seize the counterfeits.
Basically they told me that there has been a HUGE spike in really good looking fakes out there, so real that they honestly couldn't tell without the UV lamp... the bills just felt old and used, rather than fake. They also told me that the stubble isn't hard to reproduce at all, so don't ever go off that.

The thing that should be a dead giveaway is how the denomination is printed on the holographic strip. The numbers should be clearly raised in a uniform manner, but not affect the other side of the bill. And also, the number should be place ON TOP of the strip, not with it...

I never got the money back, never got my item back... I have handed all the info over to the popos now though, I had quite a bit of info about the guy just by digging through and using my mad internetz skills considering he's a bit of a n00b counterfeit user (don't want to go into details)

ive been taught 2 ways to spot fake bills.

1. hold the bill up to the light and if you look at the white " spot " next to the number ( be it 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 ) you should see a face. Works only on newer bills apparently.

2. on the far left side of the bill where it says " bank of canada - banque du canada " if you run your finger through it, you should feel bumps on the letters.

Yea i went up, asked for $20 on #4, pulled out the first hundred bill from my wallet and handed it to the cashier. Cashier received it, felt it, held it up against the light and said it was fake. After i took a closer look, i notice that there wasnt a face when i held it up against the light. texture felt softer than the other hundreds and hologram had a black boarder running down thru it. Also no one had access to my wallet, it was kept in my jeans the whole week.

Do the bumps on the letters smooth out or fade off over time after being circulated a lot? Or does this only apply to fresher bills?
