Do I need a Visa for a layover in Beijing?

Sorry for the misleading title but what what I mean is do I need a Visa to leave the airport for a 12 hour layover in @ PEK?

I've did some searching and read multiple forum topics about this but seem to be getting conflicting information. I have a 12 hour layover on the way back to Vancouver and don't really want to sit my ass at the airport for 12 hours. I would like to be able to leave the airport and go back when it's time for my flight.

Some say you need a Visa which does makes sense to me as you are entering their country. Some say if it's within a 24 hour period and you can show them that you have a connecting flight you don't. Some even say there's something you can apply for at the airport for this scenario and be granted temp entry.

Anybody have any experiences or know anything? Thanks!

You will need a visa if you exit the airport at PEK. Only in Shanghai you will not need a visa

see here for Shanghai: http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/hzqz/zgqz/t84242.htm
