I have a 9 year old shepherd who is in the same situation. But its with my neighbors next door. There is certain distance they can be on their own patio which is right by our fence before she goes ape. What i learned to do is having a spray bottle with water and i would sit outside with my dog and when she goes ape i'll squirt water at her and she would understand not to do it again. Takes time and practice.

I'm in the same situation as your neighbor. My neighbor's dog barks every time I walk through my backyard, or alleyway to take out the trash, or even opening/closing the front door of my house sometimes. Not only that, but this dog is viscous. It'll jump onto our fence fiercely.
I've already talked to my neighbor very politely about this, but all I got was bullshit about "it's a dog... what can I do?".
As a dog owner, I guess you don't care as much, but for someone who has to deal crap like this on a daily basis is just too much to bare. It's an obstruction to the peace of your own home...
I've filed in a complaint multiple times, and have requested a "package" of forms to fill out to enforce a fine on this situation. I'm also planning to take video evidence on a daily basis to further evidence...

Is this true or simply a myth?

That would be nasty having to carry around chili/jalapeno water. I think watching a dog whisperer marathon would give you some ideas or possible solutions.
OP: look at it from somoene elses point of view. Your neighbor is probably on oldscene.net bitching about your dog to his friends. I can see where he's coming from. Not everyone wants to hear a civic with a fart cannon even though the owner thinks it's no big deal.
I have a dog too and she only barks when there is a bear/coyote/deer in the yard. If you say her name she will stop. She knows whos boss. One time she was barking like crazy during the night and then the house alarm went off a few seconds after. She knew the theives were there while everyone was sleeping.
Some dogs do have very annoying barks though.

You should have somebody walk the dog more often. She'll bark less. Leaving her in the yard isn't exercising. Those German shepherds needs exercises.
I'd be pissed if some nut job telling my dog to STFU repeatedly though.

simply put, shes a guard dog, she see's something, she barks to alert us.
