I was leaving the ICBC lot this morning after my student just aced her roaad test and was almost hit by a woman driving into the lot and texting as she talked to her female passenger. Wished she had been coming in for her test...would have had a word to say to her examiner. Oh well, that which does not kill us makes us stronger...and more angry!

Am I the only one who feels a bit bad for the kid?

We all make mistakes at that age, they just usually aren't that expensive.

I still see a lot of people using their phones while driving.

mac25 06-14-2011 07:05 PM

i never saw an issue with calling someone while driving, i guess though that there are those who can't focus while talking. but i never texted while driving, even before the law was passed, texting while driving is just stupid because not only do you have to focus on the typing but most have to take their eyes from the road to check the message even if they have memorised the key pad.

mac25 06-14-2011 07:09 PM

how did she manage to push another car into a boat and into a house, that would require a lot of energy, while she only had minor injuries?

Well the fact that you need to look at your phone to push buttons is one reason. Then you have a hand off the wheel which aside from giving you less control over the car it has a psychological effect in that it directs more of your attention to the conversation.

If you have a hands-free system it is somewhat better but you're still having a conversation with someone who is not in the car.

as much can be said about chewing gum and talking to someone in your car. it's not like it takes much focus to hold the phone to your head and talk. but i do see your point about pressing the 3 or so buttons to call a friend, in that time somethink could happen.

No, it doesn't take a lot of focus to hold the phone to your head, but the act of holding the phone does help to re-prioritize your attention from driving to having a conversation.

And if you don't think carrying on a conversation with a passenger has an effect on your ability to navigate a busy road and take everything in, think again.

mac25 06-14-2011 10:52 PM

i didn't say it has no effect, obviously like any activity one participates in some bain power is involved and yes on occasion i have stopped mid sentence to focus on driving alone, then resumed the conversation, this can also be done on a mobile phone.

I'm sure if you were the owner of the car, house or boat, you would feel that way wouldn't you?
