PS3 HDMI to TV problem

hey guys, so i decided to move my ps3 from my room to the living room and i bought an hdmi cable.
trouble is, display won't change to hdmi.
here is the outline:

1) i had the white/red/yellow in place, put in the hdmi, changed it over.
this gave me 2 different results.
1st result: worked for 10 seconds, it was beautiful 1080p. but then the screen went red, then black, then went fuzzy.
2nd result: black screen both on "av input (where yellow was)" and also the HDMI input my cable was in.

2) white/yellow/red in place, hdmi plugged in, held the power button for 5 seconds when i was turning it on, asked me if i wanted to change it over, which i did.
this resulted in a black "av input" screen. for the hdmi input, the screen kept going black, then back to black (blue is default screen for my tv).

i've followed the exact instructions from my friends as well to no prevail.
you think it's my tv's problem?

if it helps, it's a viewsonic 47' 1080p HDMI tv.
many thanks in advance!

this sounds confusing but r u turning on the machine with BOTH the RCAs and HDMI pluged into the ps3 and TV??

have u tried pluging in only the HDMI to the ps3 and tv, then turn on the machine while holding the power button? try that and see if it auto detects.
