Nokia N9 review -- Engadget

highlights of review

Quote:

Love at first sight – this is possibly the most beautiful phone ever made.
N9 is in a class of its own in terms of design
You’ve never seen anything like it, and if you think it’s attractive in pictures, wait until you see it in person — it’s completely and utterly irresistible
It manages to be elegant by virtue of its minimalism yet remains unmistakably Nokia.
Camera - no match for the legendary N8, the N9 takes wonderful pictures
camera interface is simple and intuitive
Some usability niggles, too — like most Nokia phones, the camera app returns the scene and flash settings to default each time it’s started, and there’s no automatic macro (you’ll have to remember to set it manually to snap closeups).

Software:

breath of fresh air it will leave you gasping — that is, until you remember that you’re dealing with a dead man walking.
It’s impossible to dismiss what’s been achieved here — a thoroughly modern, elegant, linux-based OS with inspired design that’s simple and intuitive to use, all developed in house by Nokia.
Sure, it’s at least a year too late, and it lacks a strong ecosystem, but still, it gives Windows Phone a serious run for its money
several major online services are seamlessly integrated into MeeGo.
Surfing the web on the N9 is a minimalistic affair
We’d be foolish not to mention the delightful virtual keyboard at this point — it offers unobtrusive (and defeatable) audible and tactile feedback, plus automatic word completion, when enabled.
MeeGo generally feels quite snappy considering it’s running on mid-range hardware.
Memory management and multitasking appear to be solid, even with upwards of 20 cards in the open applications view.
plenty of room left for optimizations.
As a point of reference, the retail build on our N9 is significantly faster than the developer build on our prototype N950

Wrap up

N9 delivers a double punch with gorgeous hardware and brilliant software
arguably the first competitive flagship phone to come out of Espoo since the launch of the original iPhone — a stunning feat when you consider how far behind the company was even just a year ago.
given the choice, we’d pick MeeGo over Mango, despite its weaker ecosystem.
MeeGo is dead – long live MeeGo. (Maybe, but watch out for Qt)

* side note Myriam is wrong about email searching with the N9 being missing; you can search your emails downloaded to the device and on the server by swiping down on the email screen (search field pops up)

Oh and side note the N9 is using new antenna tech + the plastic case is supposed to help with reception

operators and reviewers are saying the N9 has the best signal reception they've ever seen

will have mine by the end of the year!

StylinRed 10-24-2011 06:58 PM

nice ^^ negrielectronics looks like it offers it cheaper than expansys by almost $100

and side note apparently all the N9s are Made in Finland @ the Salo plant and the N800/Searay (windows phone version) will be made by foxconn or some microsoft factory elsewhere

and remember me talking about Unity Games bringing their games to the N9?

Well just to show they're actually doing it; Samurai 2 will be out soon/now

bigzz786786 10-24-2011 07:18 PM

mobileDNA in lansdowne mall will sell it for 80 dollars with a 36 month contract with bell paying 67 dollars a month

it is fully unlocked btw, and they will sell all 3 colors, must put a 50 dollar deposit as it is special order

StylinRed 10-25-2011 04:05 AM

^^ any idea how much they want for the phone out of contract?

going to have to give them a check

bigzz786786 10-25-2011 08:08 AM

I think it's 758 for 16gb and 900 for the 64gb, im not sure if that includes tax

StylinRed 10-25-2011 09:15 PM

ah so same as expansys basically

you know how Nokia has 3D maps on their web maps applet?

Well 3D - "City Scene" (Streetview) is coming to your N9 maps application

expected to be announced @ Nokia World this week

StylinRed 10-26-2011 04:27 AM

we heard whispers; saw spy shots of the shell etc but now we know a white N9 is coming

White N9 64gb available this year 16gb next year

White Nokia N9 Coming this year!!!! 64GB. : My Nokia Blog

it has Firmware Update 1.1 pre-installed

Supposedly Nokia had trouble getting the Polycarbonate the right colour that's why the White was delayed

omg, stop teasing me, stop right now.

Torn between a high spec galaxy nexus and low spec but beautiful N9.. what to do when contract is up in december

bigzz786786 10-26-2011 12:12 PM

im not liking the "glossy" white, it would have been way nicer if it was satin like the other n9 colors

plus fingerprints would be everywhere instead of just on the screen itself

StylinRed 10-26-2011 12:46 PM

i imagine they had issues with the satin white hence why this one has a coat of gloss unlike the other 3

staining issues?

anyway i love it :D

the N9 is supposed to get its first firmware update by the end of the year (not sure if i mentioned) around the same time the white unit is released i imagine (since the white unit comes with the firmware update)

which deals with performance issues and unlocks some features (quite a few features are locked so far like the FM radio/transmitter; the FfacingCamera; bt4.0; etc)

video of the white n9

Oh and in case you're interested about the design of the N9/Lumia here's a good interview done by engadget with Peter Skillman

bigzz786786 10-27-2011 11:27 PM

this is probably the best review i have herd for the N9, unbiased and points out all the pros and cons, very very descriptive and informative

btw, its 23 minutes long

wasabisashimi 11-08-2011 12:10 PM

is lumia 800 same in hardware spec,? I wonder if its possible to buy a lumia 800 for cheaper and flash it to N9 meego

bigzz786786 11-08-2011 12:14 PM

^its got 1.4Ghz, but i don't think it will run as smooth as nokia n9

plus its not cheaper

plus plus! lumia has a smaller screen to fit the touch buttons, which is lame, makes it like ANY OTHER WP7 phone

firmware update (1.1) already begun to roll out for the N9, 304 fixes. plus a 1.2 update is already in the works to significantly improve the camera features

Nokia N9 gets a PR1.1 update, a ton of new features - GSMArena.com news

N9 is about 1000-1200$, thats alot for a toy phone........ love it but dunno if its practical to own it

bigzz786786 11-08-2011 12:41 PM

1000-1200!?
where are you getting your numbers from!?

the most for 16gb is 750, the most for 64gb is 900

bigzz786786 11-08-2011 12:42 PM

mobyshop.com sells the 16gb for 730 SGD which is 550 canadian, plus shipping so under 600 canadian, plus taxes, thats the cheapest so far that i have found

a shop in aberdeen center is selling it for 750

woob 11-08-2011 08:16 PM

I was checking out mobyshop. What does "Local Sets" mean in the phone description?

EDIT: nrrrr mind. It's in their FAQ.

EDIT2: Is this site legit?

bigzz786786 11-08-2011 08:40 PM

^yes it is, i had a couple of friend buy a phone from them before

also, when i googled em, they didn't seem to have any bad reviews

the only issue i would have is that they do not have international warranty, they do however try and accommodate, they have 1 year factory warranty in singapore, as long as you pay for shipping they will get it fixed and send it back

no its not the same hardware aside from the bigger chip in the lumia 800 its missing a lot compared to the N9 (less ram, no nfc chip, no fm transmitter, no front facing camera, no pentaband radio, etc)

and about pricing yeah it looks like SG has the cheapest pricing, out of contract, for the N9 around

Side note New Camera King by Nokia is rumored to be coming out Q2 next year (finally dethroning the N8?) offering Optical Zoom etc and yes running Symbian

bigzz786786 11-10-2011 05:25 PM

if all goes well, i will have my black N9 64gb by tomorrow at 3!

StylinRed 11-10-2011 05:47 PM

^^ awesome, share your thoughts on it

bigzz786786 11-11-2011 10:01 PM

got it earlier today, using my n9 to write this message. i dont have a microsim till tomorrow, i will make my own review by the end of the week. im upgrading from a nokia n8 and i can difinately say its like comparing a duo core cpu with 1 gig of ram to a quad core with 8 gigs of ram
