You know they planned on this release a long time ago but it turned out that MeeGo (& harmattan) took far longer to get ready than they planned but its finally been announced

some will feel too little too late but it still looks like a cool device im disappointed @ the camera i thought they would shove the N8s camera into it a slight positive though is they didnt put an EDOF camera into it

The UI shown to you is what Symbian^3 should have with the PR 3.0 update (dubbed Belle) that they've been delaying but supposedly its already ready

What sucks is theres 2 Versions of the N9

1) this one released to the public

2) a developer edition with Hardware QWERTY (not for public hence the 'sucks')

and if you're wondering why they're harping on Swiping (since it was available for awhile even on Nokia devices) nokias actually changed the function somewhat with "edge swipe" by doing so they removed the Back or Home buttons that usually take up the bottom of the screen as seen in symbian^3

the hands-on reviews will probably be coming in soon

^^^ its actually not even the 1st meego device

Nokia is releasing 1 Harmattan (harmattan is a mix of Maemo + Meego they're both linux based) device and at least 1 Meego device

so so far we've had the Harmattan announced now all that's left is the Meego device

which we supposedly won't see until the beginning of next year

meego is mix of Maemo + Moblin platform by intel.
this is meego device with Harmattan UX ontop which is planned to be for Maemo before the collaboration with intel.

so i don't think they will release any more device after this but i do know that they will continue to develop Meego platform on their R&D in the future which is according to the Statistic Pie they showed few months ago.

im well aware

and according to nokia they'll be releasing a harmattan meego device and a full fledged meego device
Harmattan is Maemo6 with some Meego compatability features which has Meego fans somewhat miffed that Nokia is even calling it Meego since its not a full meego kernel

new video

(Check out the 2:37 mark looks awesome swiping/video playing)

Oh

1ghz cpu (OMAP 3630)
1gb memory
512mb GPU standalone (PowerVR SGX530)

u mean a Vanilla Meego UI ?

N9 is Meego with Harmattan UX.

theres no other Meego device or Full fledge one.. as Meego is a "Full fledge" already and Maemo is pretty much dead as a dodo... afaik Nokia is only releasing this (N9) and giving N900 a Meego update after that Window7 is pretty much their future Platform/ecosystem

Maemo 6 codename is harmattan.

Maemo platform was combined with Moblin Platform

when Meego was born, Nokia decided to use Maemo UI/UX ontop of Meego.

all this is dead on the water anyway..

i just hope Nokia would port this Awesome UI on Window7 as those Window tiles are boring DOS like and uninspiring..

yes i know maemo6 is harmattan thats what im saying.... its not the full fledged meego though (that's not ready yet)

Quote:
MeeGo Compatible
something that implements the MeeGo APIs, but is not necessarily based on MeeGo Core (for example Meego-Harmattan).

MeeGo-Harmattan
the default operating system of the Nokia N9. Successor of Maemo 5, but based of the Qt toolkit. Originally named Maemo 6, but later rebranded as MeeGo-Harmattan (provisional name). It is MeeGo compatible (that is, has a MeeGo API) but is not to be confused with MeeGo 1.0 Handheld as it is NOT based on MeeGo Core.
http://wiki.meego.com/Glossary

Meego was even going to hold a session @ the meego conference this year to explain what Harmattan is and how its not Meego but the session was cancelled
http://sf2011.meego.com/program/sess...eego-community

but you can go ahead and read this if you're interested (just posted because of the N9 announcement)
https://meego.com/aggregator/sources/35

im not a fan of windows 7

and i think nokia made a huge mistake with that

they should have just fully adopted Maemo until Meego was ready instead of going with Microsoft -_-

Just a bit of new info; Damian Dinning the guy in charge of Nokias Nseries Cameras (N8 etc)

Says that the N9 shoots 8mpx for 16:9 shots and 4:3 ones (instead of downgrading the mpx to shoot the wider image)

The LEDs are the brightest ever seen (the n86 was dual leds and they were the brightest prior to the n9 and the n86 was known for its really bright flash)

The camera records in stereo sound with each mic on separate sides (like the n93/i)

and just to reiterate the N9 has CAF and 30fps @720p

and here is supposedly a video sample from the N9 from italian reviewers (who have in the past shown video samples from just announced devices) not confirmed though as yet

Engadget seems to love what they're seeing so far as well with the N9 (you can head over there to see the coverage)

here's a a video found over there (not sure if it'll embed) showing the NFC

http://www.viddler.com/explore/engadget/videos/2896/
and heres a lil more from nokia about the speaker shown in the video above

(its $150ish)

and just some more pictures

real hands on photos

it shame... that meego is dropped.. the UI/UX looks really fresh from other OS. The Best Multitasking Indeed... Nokia and Palm, it seems are the only one who can get this right. but only Nokia can get Battery right at the same time.

i hope when Elop get the boot ..(the sooner the better) someone would get the meego going again.

Some more tidbits of information

The N9 takes pictures faster than any other smartphone out there Including a Dedicated Digital Camera (Canon Powershot S95)

And in terms of concerns about App availability please recall Myriad's Alien Davik which will turn any Android App into a QT MeeGo App

:P

Nokia says "later this year"

A Switzerland telecom Carrier "3" says they'll be getting it on September 23

Rumors also say "July" "August" etc

People are guessing the phone will be anywhere from $400-$700 unlocked; nothing concrete yet

One thing I hate about Nokia:

Their product life cycle sucks ass. They are always last to release phones to the market.

But alas, I still love their phone.

What i cant stand is they say "oh it'll be out in July #" be it a device or updates and then months after like September Nokia still hasn't released it and says "Oh it'll be out by the end of the year" and you know what happens at the end of the year

Elop said he would be making sure that's changed since he's up @ bat but so far it seems Much Much Worse

the Symbian PR2.0 update was supposed to be out mooonnths ago and now it sounds like it won't be out until a few months later (even though its supposedly long been ready as we've seen video of it ages ago)

hell PR3.0 is supposed to be out by now too

i just sooo hate Elop -_-

Oh and im not sure if you read my reply in RS Chat but the E6 should be out in July or August

It's already on Pre-Order in the UK for release by the end of June (so you'll likely be able to order it from a UK online shop if you cant wait)

I take it there will not be a NAM version for the E6? (As in...they will be the same across the board other than market release dates?)

I haven't had a chance to play with it yet but will do so tomorrow (at CommunicAsia). Looking forward to getting back into a Nokia. Loved my E71. Hate my X10, Berry is good for work.
