| BC Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue - Future Overpass Upgrade?
Anyone know if the intersection on BC Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue in Delta will ever get an overpass upgrade in the future? It's frustrating to get up to this intersection during morning and afternoon rush hours. On the morning rush hours, the lineup sometimes stretches all the way to the 64th overpass or at the truck rest stop. I run along the opposing traffic actually and it doesn't really bother me as much as the people living in the east and dealing with this intersection.
I just don't see how Richmond can get the new Nelson exchange and yet there's nothing on the web that addresses this snag on Highway 91. Anyone know?
Also dug up some inquiries that are 4 years old: http://finance.dir.groups.yahoo.com/.../message/16486
" The 72nd Street Interchange is scheduled to be reconfigured as part
of the Border Infratructure Project. Supposed to be happening in 2006
to 2007.
Funding was approved, in 2002, I believe, with design to be completed
last year in addition to a summer 2004 construction start.
Yet, one year later, every time I drive by the T-intersection,
nothin' has happened - no survey stakes, nothin'.
So, a few weeks ago, my curiousity got the better of me and I decided
to give the project manager a call and here's the uptake:
BC MoT wants to construct a partial movement interchange, that is,
only a BC-91 SB to 72nd Ave. crossover connection (with the removal
of the 72nd Ave. to BC-91 SB crossover connection).
The rationale is that 97% of traffic moves from BC-91 SB to 72nd Ave.
while only 3% moves from 72nd Ave. to BC-91 SB within the T-
intersection.
The problem is, area residents as well as the local municipality
(Delta) want a *full* movement interchange and there's the impasse.
A final decision should be made within 6 to 8 months before the
tender is let.
These guys are movin' slower than molassas on this one but I'm still
lookin' forward to when that desolate light is gone!
Regards,
BCH"

I recall about 2-3 years back a proposal was issued that would create an overpass.
However it was struck down by environmentalists concerned with the preservation of Burns Bog. Something like that.
It's a damn shame. There is little sense in having a single stoplight on a major highway. That light is the main reason I avoid that route and instead take Highway 99 north through the tunnel. I would have to get onto 91 from Highway 10 and often times it's backed up ONTO 10!!! Unbelievable.

How does one get a hold of the previous petition and possibly restart a new again? I'm sure there will be new support as the eastern communities continue to grow and would like to see this area improved later on.

This light has cost me countless hours of my life.
I dont think it has anything to do with Burns bog, an overpass is not exactly going to take up a lot of room compared to the size of the bog itself. If anything an overpass would significantly reduce emissions from thousands of cars idling everyday and be better for the environment.
Basically what it comes down to is the City of Delta doesnt wasnt surrey traffic coming through their little shit city. I believe the prov govt was ready to put in an overpass and delta objected.
That is why 64 and 72 are only 2 lanes through delta even though they are major throughfares and they open up to 4 lanes as soon as you cross scott rd. Even on Nordel which is a major route do they really need a light at 116 and then another at 112?
In my opinion what should be done is the southbound exit/entrance at 72 should be eliminated altoghether, people can take nordel or 64 instead. There is no point in holding up traffic just so a few people can
take that exit.
its time to do something about it, im sure if we collaborate we can at least get something going.

I avoid that area all together if I can.
If I am coming southbound I usually take the 64th street exit instead and then take some side streets to emerge onto 72nd.
I'm trying to remember any other highways that feature a signalized traffic light in such a manner, but I can't think of any.

Forgive my ignorance but I dont know what that stretch is called | I think that's just rush hour volume. It was much much WORSE before the Queensborough connector overpass upgrade leading up to the new and improved Stewardson Way/Marine/Queensborough bridge interchanges.

Any developer undertaking a large development project should also be responsible for integrating the new roads to major routes without the use of friggin' traffic lights. What they did at Queensborough Landing should've have been been planned for the Marine Drive clusterfuck, and other similar areas, before they start building up malls, and medium/high density residences.

It boggles my mind how some projects dont see the light of day when there are soo many benefits that outweight the costs:
1. Reduced car idling which reduces pollution.
2. Faster commutes allowing more individuals to have more time sleeping, hanging out with family or any other activity etc.
3. Reduces health care costs from being stressed or lack of sleep from waking up earlier than have too .
But the Biggest benefit has to be the economical benefits for commercial vehicles. Those 18 wheelers hog a lot of gas and those goods and products can be shipped faster and cheaper..

Some of you seem that you've never been outside of the lower mainland highway system...I was just in Indiana and they basically have lights on highways that tops at 70mph...plus u turns and left turning vehicles...yes a highway..interstate on the other hand is different
Plus don't you remember tht they had a stop light just to the north end of Alex Fraser?

^ just because other cities are shietty doesn't mean we have to stoop down to their level.
Sure there are thousands of places that have much worst traffic, but we should always strive to be better.

Petition doesn't really inform people of the costs of the overpass... Needs more information before I would sign it.

as long as lois jackson (whatever her name is) is the mayor of delta, it will not change. She won't allow the overpass or the widening of 72 ave.
