they actually have something similar in dentistry that can digitally fabricate crowns. I tried playing around with it at the convention and my mind was blown.

3D printers have been around for years and can print from a various variety of materials.

There are websites (Shapeways | Passionate about creating) being one of them where you can upload your 3D design and have them print it and ship it to you.

I've used similar services to print a custom designed plastic computer chassis.

Making a copy of a solid object isn't THAT impressive. However, it blows my mind that it can recreate something that is made up of other MOVING parts!

I didn't actually pay for it. I got it from a 3D printer reseller who offered to print it for me if he could print another for a demo piece to show off the printer.

It's pretty neat how they make movable parts.

They actually deposit two different materials as the print head moves. The first material is the actual plastic that the piece is made of. The second material is a dissolving honeycomb-like material that is built up to support other pieces made of the first material. This allows you to print two parts in the same model isolated from eachother.

They have one on Mythbusters. you can buy a desktop version for under $5000 and make a DIY one for under $1000.

That is a pretty cool printer! I was at at 3D printer conference a couple months ago, and the printer they had wasn't nearly as advanced as this one in the video, it couldn't do negative space, but just top down. *yawn*. If only I could afford one of these printers!
