Where to get diamond looked at under microscope?

Recently a friend of mine bought a diamond for his to be finance - he would be interested in getting his diamond looked at under the microscope to look for brief inclusions, but not to get it appraised.

He would just like to know where he could take a look at it under the microscope briefly - perhaps in store, does anybody know where this can be done in any local jewellery stores and they wouldn't mind it?

Thanks

If your not getting it appraised the only way you can really tell is if it has a laser tagging on the diamond. I don't think they can really tell by eye through a microscope unless their professional appraisers.

depending on the quality of the diamond, a 10x magnifying glass can spot the inclusions. you can definitely give that a try first. any inclusions needing a microscope to detect will be not seen by the naked eye.

Why does he have an aversion from getting it appraised?

Where did this diamond come from? If it's certified, then there's documentation tied to it, which can be matched up with the serial no.

+1. I received a loupe when I bought a diamond for my wife. Sees inclusions that we can hardly see with the naked eye just fine.

This.

Appraisals are not expensive at all - especially when compared to the cost of a diamond.

Unless it was 0.01CT or something.

Most stores have their own microscopes, whether they will do it for you is another question. So just call bunch of jewelry stores that sell engagement rings and go from there. I know Spence for sure has it as they let you view their diamonds under a microscope before you purchase.

you can get a 30x magnification loupe off dealextreme for like 3 bux, thats where i got mine, if you look really close you can even see the laser engraved serial number too if your diamond is certified.

If he does get a microscope, what good will it be? So he sees a few inclusions. Can he make a determination as to how they affect the quality of the diamond?

My guess is most people on here would spend $5K-$20K on an engagement ring. What's an appraisal cost? Less than 3 bills?

If you purchase a fair diamond, most of the time it should be GIA CERTIFIED. Unless its fake or something.

In the GIA booklet, it should state:
- CLARITY (VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2...etc.)
- COLOR (D,E,F,G,H,I..etc.),
- CARAT (1ct, 2ct...etc)
- CUT (Brilliant...etc.)
- Inscription Registry
- GIA Report
- Symmetry
- Polish
- Table Depth
- and a few more things...

If your friend wants to view it under microscope, go to any jewelers. Ben Moss and Peoples at Metro can help.
Good luck!

in fact, the store you bought the diamond from, will send it out for appraisal for free if their service is top notch. the diamond i bought came with the appraisal service.

3. Make friends
3. Use theirs or just let them do it.
