Anyone good with 4x4's? In a little bit of a tough situation here, went for a drive earlier today down some pretty easy logging roads, switched the hubs, popped it into 4H and off we go. 2 hours later with a hiking break or two, we head back to the road. When I get back to the road the car wont shift back to 2wd. 4wd stays illuminated on the dash. I switch the hubs back and put it into 2H and try to drive, I get into 2nd gear and about 35km/h and the transmission makes a thud sound like its trying to engage? So at this point I'm like shit and put it back into 4H and head back to our hotel. I read up a bit on it and tried driving slowly and switching it from 4H to 2H (going about 5-10km/h) with no luck. EDIT-->Just tried putting hubs to Free, having in 4H, driving backwards 50-100 ft, then shifting to 2H and nothing. Still stuck Canada, 1994, Suzuki, Sidekick, 1.6l, 16, efi, 5speed, 4WD I'm away from home with no tools with me. Hoping to have someone shed some light on the matter for me! I'd love for an easy fix to this as we were suppose to head home today and are now stuck waiting around. We are in Whistler at the moment...if there are any backyard mechanics who want to make a quick $$$ tomorrow PLEASE PM ME and Ill send you my # and we can arrange something. We have hotel reservations for monday night in Van and would like to get it sorted before monday. |
id suspect the t-case linkage between the shifter could be binding / bent worst case scenario disconnect the driveshaft going to the front diff and you are good to go |
^ I'm kinda outta luck with having no tools with me so not sure how I can! :( |
Check to make sure no rocks are jammed in between the linkage and the trans/transfer case. I had something similar to this happen to the Dodge work truck up north over the summer, Could not shift out of drive... |
doesn't look like there are any rocks jammed up any where.... If anyone's willing to come up to Whistler today and remove my hubs for me, PM ME! Will pay cash for your time. |

^ Cuz I'm not very good with this sort of stuff, tow truck company said no, as of legalities. Got $100 if someone can come up and give me a quick hand, pm me |
i dont know howsophisticated the 4x4/t-case is, but when my Ford Explorer was giving me 4x4 issues (4x4 light flashing and not engaging properly - making noise) after hooking it up to the computer it was pointing to a transfer case shaft speed sensor failure. New sensor poped in, and the car was ready to go again. |
Try driving slowly in reverse and shifting it into 2wd |
