Possible to get a ticket from Volunteer Speed Trap?

I was at crescent beach and passed through a speed trap and was doing 38 in a 30 zone. no one stopped me or nothing and i didnt see a flash of any sort either. but i did happen to see that the uniforms the people were wearing said "Volunteer" on them. didn't see any police though, just wondering if i should expect a ticket in the mail?..

thoughts?..

Nope. You might get a letter in the mail stating you were clocked at X-km/h and to watch your speed, but that's about it. Been there, done that, got the letter.

Oops.

the volunteer people are jokes...mostly retired 70 year olds trying to play the role of cops.

Careful though, if you don't change your speed down the road, an actual cop might be there.
I did this for work experience when I was in high school. We mostly did school zones with cops hiding in the bush down the street.

even if it were a real speed trap, to ticket someone going 38 in a 30 zone would be a real jerk move.

They simply take down your license plate number and report it.

Those are often set up in that area. Sometimes an actual police officer will pay them a visit and pull a couple people aside and give them tickets, but as far as the volunteers only seeing you, it's no different than a random person calling 911 and reporting you.

And my funnest thing would to sit downstream from these signs with a "real" Radar or Laser unit and tag those still speeding. Loved letting the JP in Traffic Court hear that the driver had ignored the speedwatch board and continued speeding. No fine reductions there.

This!

It happened to someone I know.

He got slapped with a worst fine because the cop was giving him a "break"

They don't take down your plate, they simply record down how many cars were driving at what speed and hand them off to icbc for statistical purposes.

why wouldn't you go 30km/h in a 30km/h zone? one of my pet peeves is when people don't drive the posted speed sign in a school zone. sorry.

but don't think they can do much anyways. i had a chat with one of them a little while ago, if they feel like it they can report you to the real police however they are just there as intimidation.

I got my first speeding ticket at one. Sometimes there IS an officer with them.

If an officer didn't step out, I wouldn't worry about it.

ya i've seen this before. in some cases, cops were hiding in undercover cars.
other times, they were just using the radars and probably sent some license plates in.

one time i saw volunteers stopping cars and telling them to pull over

saw these volunteers before hiding under the overpass after crossing the Arthur Liang heading to the Airport. A lot of people just drove by them at least 80+ km/h including myself. Saw one person with a clipboard, so I assume they were doing some research for icbc statistics.

Doesn't that tell you to be more careful and drive a lot more safe then?

If the risk is not worth the 3mth or 6mth suspension...

DONT DO IT!
