School zone speeders take note

Don't be caught in big picture

Quote:

Speedsters who zoom through school zones stand a chance of having their photos taken and getting a scolding, as more than 540,000 kids head back to school today in B.C.

The Community Against Preventable Injuries, also known as Preventable, is positioning a digital billboard outside Aubrey Elementary in Burnaby today that will photograph speeding cars and display their picture for 20 seconds with the message, "Before you rush through here, have a word with yourself."

This is the first time the technology has been used in North America. No records of the pictures will be kept.

Allan Lamb, spokesman for Preventable and president of the BCAA Road Safety Foundation, said the sign will be moved around schools in Burnaby for two days before moving to Surrey schools Thursday and Friday.

There's not enough money to keep the sign and its message travelling around the province all year long. Lamb hopes a high-profile, weeklong blitz will get the crucial message to drivers to slow down.

"On average, seven persons are killed in traffic accidents every week in our province," he said.

"Traffic crashes are the leading cause of deaths and injuries for our young people," said Lamb. "There's nothing that kills our teenagers more than traffic crashes. Nothing. It's absolutely horrific."

SafeKids Canada, which defines children as those up to 19 years of age, notes that children aged 10 to 14 years have the highest incidence of pedestrian-related injuries while those aged five to 14 years are at the greatest risk for pedestrian-related fatalities.

There's more than just the toll on lives, Lamb said.

"Our province is paying $8.8 billion in social costs for traffic crashes. These are preventable, they're predictable and they're totally unnecessary."

The school zone speed limit is 30 km/h and is in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Monday to Friday, unless otherwise posted.

Breaking the rules could result in a fine of $196 to $253. Speeding 40 kilometres or more over the speed limit results in the impoundment of a vehicle for seven days.

I walk by cook elementary almost everyday and no one slows down to 30 infront of it. I'm just waiting to see an ambulance outside of the school on day.

Watch your speeds and pay attention. It's not just high schoolers.

Last year they tried the illusion sticker and this year a giant tv screen. what will be next? I think the illusion sticker was a better idea to get the message across.

Slowing down for children i'm all for it. Slowing down for bums on hastings, totally against.

I'm gonna go ride through on my bicycle doing 40

No tax dollars were used.

If it makes you think about slowing down in a school zone, seems like a good idea to me.

Mr.HappySilp 09-06-2011 09:57 PM

why not just have police set up speeding traps around school zone areas for the first 2 weeks of school? We could get a ton of revenue that way and it might help pay off the 3 billion dollars to convert back to GST/PST.

Nightwalker 09-06-2011 10:01 PM

I can see these working well. I've absolutely seen that the signs that shows peoples speed have slowed people down in those areas.

People are very social, shaming someone works. Seems like the average driver doesn't like it, especially if their passengers can see.

I'd rather danger was prevented than used as a cash grab, but while speed traps are still in use, I can't argue with that (plus this).

The financial decisions of the province (and voters) are an entirely different matter though...

wow kinda odd, I got my picture taken by the traffic cop first thing this morning as I drove by there doing 50 km/h at 7:15 (even though the school zone starts at 8am)

yameen 09-06-2011 10:06 PM

they should put up cardboard photos of kids along the sidewalk/grass as if they're going to jump out on the street in the school zone. this would definitely make drivers slow down from a distance.

Great idea. My daughters both go to Aubrey and I see fucking idiots speed down Parker all the time.

This summer when school was just finishing up this prick in a Jeep Commanche blows by me on the right (I guess he didn't like me doing 30 km/h in the school zone). I couldnt get his plate since it was dirty. I watch him and he passes two more cars on Parker (one on left, one on right) before I can't see him anymore.

If anyone in Burnaby sees a dark purple/black cherry Jeep Commanche with a cap on the truck bed and some front end damage from a minor collision I'd love to hear about it.

Edited: I don't fucking believe it. I was googling for Commanche pics to post up when I found what I think is the exact vehicle in question.

And the page the pics are from....

Jeep Commanche

It's an old ad from 2006 so the new owner may have bought it from this guy. Gonna e-mail anyway to see if I get a response.

Only difference is the truck is a little beat up and has a headlight/turn signal bashed in from a small accident on the front right corner.

Anyone in Burnaby see this guy around? Considering how he drives I bet some of you have.

i have a similar story while leaving work where a UPS truck was tail gating me b/c i'm doing 30km/hr in a school zone, then honks me a few times, and then crosses the yellow line to pass on the left (single lanes going each way only), floors it and cuts me off while yelling at me when he was next to me. i didn't have my phone handy or else i'd take a pic and send it to UPS's head office.

whatever helps ppl slow down in school zones i'm for. not sure how effective this will be though.

gars 09-07-2011 11:17 AM

what bugs me just as much as speeding cars are the dumb parents who will jaywalk with their little kids. Schools and ICBC spends so much money trying to teach kids to cross safely, and then their dumbass parents will throw that out the window by cross major roads with their little kids, just to save a few minutes.

pk_volt 09-08-2011 10:18 PM

makes me wanna zoom by and finger the camera...

b0unce. [?] 09-08-2011 10:45 PM

since i live half a block from an elementary school... daily i see idiot parents who ignore the posted speed limit signs, restricted parking signs, overall wreckless driving from parents who are probably late for their kids after school activities, and yeah nearly every parent is jay walking with their kid is just save maybe a minute at best to cross at the cross walk.

GabAlmighty 09-08-2011 11:00 PM

Living up from an elemantary school and having my entire neighbourhood a 30 zone it's frustrating during school hours all the kids just whiping across the road with no regard for where the crosswalk is.

And i've been passed a couple times in my neighbourhood for going 30-40 during the day. Pretty silly.
