| Netbook ram question
I just picked up an Acer netbook with 1gb ram and find it`s a little sluggish. Will upgrading to 2gb ram fix this issue? The computer is only used for document editing, emails, downloading music etc but I am curious as if I should upgrade to a larger netbook with 4gb ram or would 2 suffice?

What ACER netbook is it and do you know the maximum allowable RAM size. I'd upgrade to the maximum RAM size it allows you. I have the ACER AO722 and it's definitely worth the upgrade.

Atom's are just slow. Upgrading RAM will help a bit.

I will be travelling around Europe for the next 4 months. I have traveled with a 13" before and just find it to big for my small bag. I also don't need the features of a full laptop as it's mainly going to be for writing emails/resumes in the coming months.
I've checked out a few other computers and this one caught my eye earlier today --> Acer 11.6" AMD C50 Processor Laptop (AO722-BZ634) - Black : 13" Laptops and Smaller - Future Shop
mainly due to the fact that it has a 11" screen, and can support higher then shit resolution as it's pretty hard to work off two documents on a net-book's rez.
There is a $50 price difference from 2gb to 4gb but I don't think I'd really need more then 2gb for document editing? I don't know much about the AMD processor either, is it fairly quick for multi-tasking?

I have the exact same Netbook you listed and it's quite snappy for a Netbook and you can watch 720p and some 1080p on youtube with no lag at all. Get the 4GB model or upgrade it yourself. It's definitely worth it! Though if you have some extra cash try and get the E-350 processors, they are pretty awesome!

Hybrid SSD is also an option. Seagate makes one. 4 GB SSD piggybacked on a 7200RPM 500GB drive

They found the 4GB ssd wasn't enough to justify the price of an "upgrade". General consensus was yes it will perform better, but not worth it.

The AMD Fusion powered ones should be decent as well.

a SSD costs about 1/2 of a nettop.
I did try swapping my Vertex2 into my HP, it's a bit quicker no doubt, just not amazing quick.

Full SSD isnt worth the cost/speed/capacity for a net book. Hybrid is a good compromise i found. its the best bang for the buck as i am a storage whore.

Yes, it's true.. netbooks are pretty slow. But most people who do buy netbooks don't tend to expect high performance, but rather purchase them for mobility, size and battery life. This is the same reasons I use a netbook. I upgraded my netbook from 1 to 2g ddr3. It does improve performance slightly. I find I am able to have more windows and applications open without it lagging too much..
I run a dual boot system running openSUSE linux and windows 7. I mainly use linux to write script or configure servers and routers.. I use Windows to check email and browse the web. Nothing to intensive; very basic stuff. It's more than enough. So when people tell you to get a real notebook.. you can tell him to fuck off.. lol jk. It's all about form and functions and what it applies to. =)
If I wanted to run network simulations or play games I probably wouldn't be using my netbook for that..
There are always things you can do to tweak the performance; many of them have already been listed.
Have fun with it.

I think Im happy with the Acer one 722 now....Ill upgrade it to 4gb of ram and it should good. The biggest issue with the 10.1" netbook for me was the resolution as its fucking hard to work from two documents on that tiny ass screen size.
Thanks for the input all.

I got the one 722 on sale for $270 and it has the same 1366x768 resolution so the only benefit would be the extra ram. I'll just upgrade that instead, thanks though!
I was pretty surprised with the battery life on this laptop as it's about 6 hours for docu editing.

Ohh ok. I was looking at the link you posted earlier. In that upgrade the RAM.
If you find load times still slow and 60gb is enough then $95 will get you an OCZ 60GB SSD that will also help if you wanna go that route.

I've been looking into SSD and I think that's the route I'll be going, I've got a 500gb external so I don't really need a big HD in the computer.
Future shop is actually false advertising these computers and claims that the higher priced model has a better screen. The sales person told me that if I wanted the high rez I had to pay more but they both have the same screen, mother fuckers.
