From a 05 dc5s owner, I'd definitely say go for the speed3. Originally I had the 09 speed3 in mind when I was in the market for a car. Only reason I didn't is because of the budget.
Only major gripe I have with the rsx is that it lacks a shit load of low end torque (because of it's high revving character), especially with the 05+ new power/torque figures (143 lbft @ 7000rpm). It is not really enough for daily especially after coming to a full stop. Another thing is the 3rd gear grind. If you are lucky, you will pick up one with no problems. But the majority is plagued. Just make sure the tranny fluid gets changed diligently.
The 2011 speed3: great car, stiff chassis/suspension, more than enough power and torque for daily, practical (hatchback)
cons: fwd with 263 hp = torque steer. so much that if you punch it in 1st, it's borderline scary.
test driven it once so I can't really say much about it.

IMO it all comes down to figuring out your total expenditures over time with each option and figuring out which option makes you happiest per dollar.
For OP, the MS3 makes him $8000 happier over three years. That's like $222 a month. I guess for a lot of people they'd be happier spending that $222 on something else, but it really depends on you right? Also that $222 is prolly more like $180 if he keeps his car long term, with depreciation leveling out, and assuming buyout is lower than market value.
Just my two cents.

have you leased a car before? I haven't but my parents have many times and the buyout at the end of your lease is always a lot more then what you would of payed if you just bought it instead.. OP says he's going to try to not mod but probably will. Unless its just rims your going to void your warranty which to me is the only reason i'd buy a new car.

Unless its just rims your going to void your warranty which to me is the only reason i'd buy a new car. | I am probably going to have to agree about the modding part. Not sure if I can hold off the modding bug. Looks like it will be dictated by how much extra money I have.
If you tell me the residual is way more than they expected, then its probably poor planning in their part. When you lease a car, they would tell you how much the car is actually worth. Some cars probably yes the residual is way high, but for some its not. My co-worker leased a MB GLK and the lease is up later this year(maybe he did a two year lease?), the residual is twenty something thousand, or so he told me. Good luck finding a GLK under 30...
Anyways... Onwards. Went to two Mazda dealerships today, one pretty mediocre experience turned good, and one terrible experience. Also hit up VW today to try the GTI and took a look at the new GLI.
I figured out my plan with the MS3 isn't going too well as they have ran out of the base MS3's except for black, which I don't want. Any other colours then it will have to be with the Tech Package.
Going to a 3rd dealership on Tues and a 4th one on Wednesday.

Sunroofs are overrated.
So are the torque steer claims.

OP says he's going to try to not mod but probably will. Unless its just rims your going to void your warranty which to me is the only reason i'd buy a new car. | It all depends on how the lease is structured. It sounds like your parents leased with little/no downpayment, kept monthly payments low, and that is why the buyout at the end of your lease is high.
With low lease rates 1.9% or lower, leasing gives you a ton of flexibility. If you are only planning on keeping the car for 3-4 years, you don't have to take the hit of trading in or inconvenience of selling privately when you want a new vehicle, or you can buy it out if you want to keep the vehicle.
To OP, any reason why you aren't looking at pre-owned MS3's if you are looking at pre-owned RSX's? Sounds like the perfect match to me. All the power you need, affordable, and let somebody else take the depreciation hit for you. You'd still get the balance of the 5yr powertrain warranty

I can buy a used RSX Type S outright, but a used MS3 is just a little out of reach. I don't like the idea of having to pay 5% interest on the car. Its something that I will have consider if I come across a very good deal for a used one.

Side note, anyone know what invoice price is on a MS3? I am not using it to bargain, but rather the dealership brought it up. He won't tell me the exact number but it got me piqued.

I was looking for a manual and did not like the way the clutch felt on the 2012 GTI, and the MK5 looks a little dated to me now. Quote:

Awesome buy! Welcome to the MS3 family. Check out mazdaspeedforums for a wealth of info and how to start modding safely (if you haven't already) and of course join our local BCmazda3 forum too.
