New car... Same model but higher version of it?

Wondering how many people would buy a higher version of their same car model.

For example, you currently drive a 328, but you have the opportunity now to upgrade to m3... would you do it or would you rather get a completely different car such as a porsche.

Currently in this situation

AVS_Racing 09-21-2011 06:53 PM

well depends how much you like your car or the upgraded model of your car to the "new" car

124Y 09-21-2011 07:39 PM

I drove a Lancer GTS before and I upgraded to an Evo. I was going to go for an STI, but Subaru's 4.9% financing is just no match against Mitsubishi's 0% financing. It's actually the deal that got me into another Mitsu, not because I really like it that much over the STI.

vdub604 09-21-2011 07:59 PM

depends on how much of an upgrade.

124y's for instance GTS -> Evo i would say is 2 different car.

328i - > M3 is two VERY different car.

but in my case, vw GTI -> 2012 golf R ... no ... same shit in a different package.

vdub604 09-21-2011 08:10 PM

wow double post

Even EVOs have 0% financing? Or was it a special deal? :suspicious:

I wouldn't consider 328i to m3 the same type of car. Before clicking this thread, I meant you say something like from a BASE 328i to a loaded with leather/navi/tech/sport package.

I thought you were going to say something like Civic DX to Civic Si.

It depends on what you like.. no one can really force you into personal preference.

Personally, I'd go with something completely new. That's just me.

It was a promotion. 48-month 0% financing.

Nightwalker 09-21-2011 10:46 PM

It's really personal preference. Some people happily buy the same car over and over again.

Supafly 09-22-2011 09:06 AM

I would...I love my car....and would def move up the ladder for a CLK63 Black Series if I had the option to get one into canada legally.

ilvtofu 09-22-2011 09:28 AM

Which two porsches are you talking about? cayman -> cayman S or c2 -> c2S/c4s
I'd probably pass, c2 -> gt3/gt3rs/turbo might be worth considering

kwy 09-22-2011 09:35 AM

My DSM is the highest trim level (TSi AWD or GSX). I've actually had thoughts about downgrading though. Maintaining the AWD system can get expensive.

IMO i prefer getting a different brand or different class of the same brand just for a new driving feel of the car. And like vdub604 said.. 328 and m3 are totally different cars haha, but if you feel its similar because of characteristics then I suggest trying a different brand. I kinda regret switching to amg from bimmer though.. i think bimmers have a much better feel and handling

Over9000 09-23-2011 01:01 AM

I don't think an M3 from a 328i is just an "upgrade of the same car" there is so much more into the engineering of the car....

HonestTea 09-23-2011 01:02 AM

Hell yeah!

328i -> M3

hpw912 09-23-2011 10:22 AM

just do what you LIKE more if money is not an issue.
for some of us when money is a bigger factor, we usually go for the cheaper deal if we like either option.

Great68 09-23-2011 10:31 AM

On the Mazda forums it seems like there's a lot of people who graduate to MS3's from regular Mazda 3's and they're all happy with the switch.

white rocket 09-23-2011 12:58 PM

what do you drive? What do you want to upgrade to?

busdriverman 09-23-2011 01:21 PM

^ knowing what you are driving atm and what you are considering helps alot

like others have said, a 328 -> m3 is not the same as a GTI -> golf R

are you fucking serious? lol FWD -> AWD + Turbo motor

328i - > m3 more power better suspension.. yes the car changes quite a lot but its still considered a 3 series car is it not?

BillyBishop 09-23-2011 10:02 PM

I'm pretty sure that he drives that SL in his avatar.

the M3 is classified as an M-Car, not a 3 series

Harvey Specter 09-24-2011 12:23 AM

328i to 335i would make sense, not 328i to m3.

I have a 2010 3 series coupe, I was thinking about getting new or a year old M3 seeing how they're pretty cheap down in the states but I think I'm going to hold off and wait for the new 3 series coupe to drop.

Golf r is a 2.0t FSI with a k04 engine, haldex 4motion. It's fwd with 50% delivery to the rear
It uses the last generation S3 based engine. Cost $44+tax ...

A mk6 Gti is 2.0t TSI k03. Fwd yes, but a TSI with a k04 from APR can run 350bhp and still cost less than the golf R.
Mind you not saying gti is worth the 35k price tag + $3000kit.

But yeah they are almost the same car, the golf R used the s3 old style engine to cut cost rather than develope the much more efficient tsi engine

At the golf R price, I'm sorry there are many more choices unless if refinement was what you are looking for. And refinement at almost 50k for essentially a golf is ridiculous.
I'm a dubber and I wouldn't go from a Gti to a R. The mk4 and mk5 R32 were different, The VR6 is special, can yield massive power when boosted and sound incredible.
