So you really think you know the GVRD?

Revscene Car Rally:

I ran into some RS mods and admins this fine morning, and over a fantastic Ikea breakfast, I asked what some of them thought of the idea of a car rally for RS members. Not the kind where you fly over hills and power slide through sharp turns, but the kind where driver and navigator get handed instructions to get from one checkpoint to the next.

They agreed it would be a good idea.

I have, by the way, organized a few of these events in the past.

So, here's the plan. The car rally will be held on a Saturday. It won't be anytime soon, as there's a lot of planning involved. Saturday is a good day, because it's a weekend and places will be open - places, as in Revscene sponsors. I would like to incorporate them into the car rally. Make them into checkpoints. This way, RS members can see what these places are all about. For example, I have never been to Rise Auto Salon. I would like to see what they have to offer. I have also never been to Evolution Auto Performance. You get the idea............

There will be a scavenger hunt incorporated into the driving instructions as well. You go along the route and find things hidden along the way. The instructions will be coded messages full of puzzles you will need to solve, in order to get from point A to point B. There will be emergency contact numbers you will be able to call if you are lost, but it will cost you points. The rally will be timed, so anyone speeding will be penalized and/or disqualified for arriving early at a checkpoint.

The winner(s) will be the team that racks up the most amount of points. We can also have prizes for best/worst dressed people, best decorated car, etc.

How complicated/challenging or how long people want this rally to be, is what this thread is about.

Any other feedback would also be welcomed.

I was thinking of keeping it quite local........ let's say from North Van to Tsawassen and from Point Grey/UBC to Aldergrove. No crazy roads full of potholes and no twisty gravel roads.

Would you guys want it to be a family oriented event or more adult oriented - I organized one where freshly worn crotchless panties were produced for points.

If sponsors are going to be involved, we won't need too many volunteers. The checkpoint envelopes will just be handed out at those locations. I may need a couple of people to help me plan the route and look for weird signs and good places to hide stuff. Of course, people who help won't be able to participate.

I will need someone to work with the RS sponsors. Get them on board.

The car rally would also be a great way for some members to see places they're never been to, like Wonnock, BC. So many people have seen the world, yet know very little about places in their backyard.

MG1 09-25-2011 02:49 PM

Another important question is, do we want this to be just for RS members and family or do we make this into a bigger event where anyone can sign up.

I guess mods and admins will have to step in on this one.

Make it into a fund raiser?

Anjew 09-25-2011 04:18 PM

start small first with a small group for trial. kinda it was done during 39.9c/l gas lol

skiiipi 09-25-2011 04:35 PM

One way to make sure people don't speed is to seal the driver's license in a sealed envelop with a stamp/signiture on the back. If the envelope is opened (ie driver gets pulled over), they are automatically disqualified.

This sounds great! I'd love to partake in this event.

MG1 09-25-2011 04:48 PM

Start small.......... I like that idea.

Sealed license is good idea. Thanks, guys.

Redlines_Daily 09-25-2011 04:56 PM

what if someone gets pulled over for loud exhaust or something silly, then they are disqualified. Alternatively, others can still speed and not get pulled over!

MG1 09-25-2011 05:15 PM

Someone chooses to have loud exhaust, it's their problem. If the seal is broken, they need to show the ticket.

As for speeding, hopefully people will know better. If we worried about everything, we wouldn't be able to hold any kind of event. I think the admins and mods know which people are the trouble makers - behave like asses at the RS summer meets and other organized events.

Like suggested, we can start small and only invite those who we know. Doesn't take long before people know who the douchebags are.

Thanks for suggestion.

Its a good idea, yet it'll be a lot of work for little reward, and a lot of frustration. Good luck if you do it!

The Fraternities and Sowhorities in Ottawa used to do car rallies for fun, with silly prizes. Since everyone sorta knew everyone else in the "greek" community it kept the atmosphere fun, with minimal cheating and frustration.

I remember taking part in "motorcycle tag" here last year. It was a really simple game, with no prize for winning other than bragging rights of knowing GVA well enough to identify landmarks and then speedily right out to take a picture of your bike infront of them. It surprised me how many people cheated at it, or got annoyed by the very simple rules, or stopped playing cause they couldn't get enough tags to "win".

Great tip, we had this implied when I partook in a scavenger hunt. One of them was pick up a sewer cover and a shopping cart for extra points. We won. ;)

^ Avoid adding items like this to a scavenger hunt. Engineering frosh week was almost shut down on my school cause the scavenger hunt included road signs, and the mayor just happened to come by the engineering department the day of the scavenger hunt. Luckily charges were not laid, yet they were told in not so nice terms to put everything back where it was taken from.

Yes, but as far as the crotchless panties go, just display it and not wear it. Unless your girlfriend is hot and shows it off. If that happens, you automatically win........ a special prize - to be given out by me.

If it brings our good community closer together and it forces some people from Richmond to cross the river, "Mission" accomplished. My reward will be seeing Miss Crayon, Girl, Saucywoman, and the other women of RS, again.

Plus, I think the sponsors getting involved would be a good thing. It costs them nothing and members will get to see their place of business.

FerrariEnzo 09-25-2011 07:10 PM

will there some sort of stamp from the vendors who par take in these, so it proves that they visited this places...
it at least take a picture with them in it doing a pose, so to not disturb the vendors doing business...

is there a limit of persons per car?

Gumby 09-25-2011 07:17 PM

I don't think I'd have the time to participate, but I'd make an effort to come out just to meet MG1. :)

DC5-S 09-25-2011 07:28 PM

Fuuuu... my setup is super loud..

The participants will have to get their next envelope from the sponsor's shop. We would most likely have a big sign that says pick up next envelope here.

You can have twenty people in your bus, if you want. All it takes is a real smart navigator.

Hey, just thought of something. Best looking navigator award. Bring a hot blonde along. May not win the car rally with her, but may win that award. And, as usual, I'll give out the prize. Appropriate hug and kiss, LOL. No, Raygunpk - not that pic, please.

Spoiler!

Matsuda and rcubed just did a challenge like this in WA. you should ask them how it went and learn from that.

Should be lower mainland based

Aldergrove Twassan UBC limits are pretty far

gas aint cheap!

Mr.C 09-25-2011 08:50 PM

I'd be down for it. And it's spelled Whonnock, if the one you are talking about is that location near the Ruskin Dam (awesome construction style, btw). I loved working in that area, so many twisties there. Asphalt is sort of bad for the lowered cars here, especially Old Dewdney. Very bumpy. Would be cool though.

k3mps 09-25-2011 09:04 PM

Basically kind of like top gear classic time rally (season 13) meets the italian hatchback scavenger hunt (season 17).
I love the idea

BrRsn 09-25-2011 09:12 PM

can we start in point roberts so us cheapo's can get a full tank of gas for like $50? lol. Or do a group cruise to pt roberts for cheap gas the night before ... I get 12MPG, I'm down :fullofwin:
