Yeah except I don't have a home and I pay for my own shit including rent and food. I'm not going home to a home cooked meal and I have to work. If I had a choice and had parents who would cook for me and house me id take advatnage of it. I was shocked that people were suprised that someone works like that.

Also it helps if what your doing is relating to your career . I'd have a friend who worked 40 hours a week as an accountant while going to school for accounting. Now he's a CA for the big 4. You dont need a social life while in school. SCHOOL IS A SOCIAL LIFE.

You see, once your conversation goes beyond this border, you'll come to the unforgiving realization that you have wasted your time. Either you get straight to your homework, or you discuss about it. That's as efficient as it gets. As a first year, I'm an exception. But can't say the same for you 3rd year 4rth years here.

Then don't go to fucking school if you can't handle work and school and stop complaining about it. Your not there to fucking have fun your there to get ahead in life.

PS: School's for networking, especially if you're taking arts/business.

Well yeah, there's no doubt about that. I'm still in the process of finding the right balance for everything. But out of curiousity, if school isn't your definition of fun, where and how do you make space out of your busy and "independent' schedule, for it? Part of networking is having the experience and knowledge for it, experience you can't simply get from socializing in school.

are you for reals? unless your jobs are super chill, or unless you are studying something super chill, theres no way having 2 jobs can be of benefit to anyone. Your marks will be affected in some way or the other. If you can't support your own education, there's something called a student loan. So go back under that bridge where you belong...

if you need to work 40 hours a week while in school you are probably living outside your means as a student

max student loans is more than enough to cover your average tuition costs as a domestic student...not to mention the bursaires a student in need is eligble for...if you are in an expensive professional school (>$20K/yr) then you probably need to take out student LoC

Rent, food, gym, cell phone, insurance, gas, internet, money to go out, savings/rrsp.

When you live at home and you eat at home, life becomes that much more cheaper.

I don't have that luxury.

Instant: You just started school and you are 17-19 years old. If you honestly think this is hard, I can't wait to see what happens when you get older and have to support yourself. You work what, 1 job at 24 hours a week? Take out a loan then and don't work.

My prof does her PhD at ubc, teaches at langara, raise 3 kids, mark papers, cook dinner and shit.

So I don't believe this shit about not having enough time. Just some kids have it better than others.

Listen. If I fucking have time to work 40 hours a week, go to school and take 4 courses, have a social life, and still find time to study write papers and go to the gym, maybe you should look at yourself and see what you can do to better your life than making posts on revscene.

Prior to going to school I was working 64 hours a week and banking cash, and I still retained a social life! It just comes down to time managment.

Not trying to bash on you man, chill. Props to you if what you said is really true. It's a very hard lifestyle, not to mention a very unhealthy one. Not sure if you're Asian, but what you have to understand is, not all Asians that rely on support from their parents are "spoiled". Growing up, alot of these Asians had parents that were really protective of them and so they never really got the chance to become independent. Independency is a good thing in many aspects, it let's you discover who and what you really are. Some asian kids never really get a say in what they want or aim to study because they are pressured by their parents to go into "commerce" or "med school" or "law school". Independency is a gift given to you that not many people have the luxury of attaining. Don't get me wrong though, there are definitely alot of spoiled Asian kids out there that continue to leech off their parents even after graduating from university. Its just wrong to stereotype Asians who rely on their parents as being spoiled.

i go to school FT at bcit. i work sundays all day, and monday mornings (930-130) handling it pretty well just cause its a small workload. its about personal preference and job description. my job is pretty slack so its not that big of a problem.

I think it would squash a lot of the beef if all the shit talkers said what job they had specifically and what program they're taking.
There are lots of jobs were you can do homework while at work, or not that exhausting all.

We can talk about how hard work equals success, it's true, but I don't think we'd be on this forum if we were all billionaires... except maybe hyde...

If you take out a loan, you've got to pay it back anyways, so what's the big deal?

been work 3 part time jobs and attending school part time and full time. currently working 4 part time jobs and doing ft school. work 30 hrs a week and go to school 12 hrs a week. i try to hit the gyn at least twice a week as well.

again, if you are not having fun with school and meeting people, you need to work on your social skills.

there are so much things I can say about this thread, but i'll just limit myself :)

1. Like others have already said. Motivation is key. If you can conceive it, you CAN achieve it. No bullshit. There are those who lead/initiate, and there are those who follow/happy with status quo. Which group are you?

2. School is not just about studying. It's about taking you to another level you haven't been before. Mentally, physically, socially, financially. Everything. Others can elaborate for me. Make use of the schooling that you are privileged to have.

Years ago when I went to UBC, I worked as a parkade cashier. I would get off class at 2pm, then sit in the parkade studying/working from 330PM-11PM. Unionized $14.50/hour + free faculty/staff parking pass BOOYEAH!

Majin makes it sound wrong to be upper class, or to want your kids to have a better life. In the end these "Asian kids" are the ones working 12 hour days in china 6 days a week and having certain luxuries for their families so their kids wouldn't have to work low wage jobs while in school. You are not a better person because you work AND go to school, it's merely a circumstance that you're given. So what if they don't have to work, eventually that's all they'll ever do.

Nowhere did I say it was wrong to be upper class, but I'm saying that if you live at home and your parents feed you why you stressing working more than 24 hours a week? 24 hours a week is nothing! Like achiam said you find aj ob that SUITS YOU for your schedule. My jobs are perfect because I can work 12 hour days fri sat sunday.

Wtf bro? Where the hell did I say I can't have fun and meet people at school? I just said, you having a job at a club will also allow you to socialize and work at the same time. And yes I am very aware of what I can and can't do thank you very much. All I said was, as you go up to 3rd or 4rth year, things might start to be more academic-oriented.. doesn't mean there isn't time for fun.. And like I said I'm first year so I'm still in the process of getting a grip on things... Im not old and such like you are... But it doesn't take someone that old to realize that 3rd year and 4rth year is where you start giving your all...especially for those going into graduate school
