| St. George's Junior School (Grade 2) entrance exam
I have a son that is in Grade 1. I would like him to try to enroll into St. George's Junior School in Vancouver.
I am wondering if I can get any info about the entrance assesment test so I can help my son prepare for the test. I believe there are a few people from St. George's/private school here. Just wondering if you guys remember what was on the assessment test.

I did not apply for st. georges, however, I did apply for st.Francis Xavier which is a private school of high ranking as well. I would imagine their assessments would be the same. This may seem stupid, but I remember really clearly what I did exactly for my assessment. I had to identify certain colours in a diagram, spell out certain words, read some sentences. I remember feeling pretty damn baus as a 5 year old to be accepted by such a private school. Mind you, back then, st. Francis was a really big deal back then. But truth be told, one of the major factors for my acceptance was my parents background. Because my parents both held bachelor degrees and had above average incomes, it was easy for me to get in. Although st georges is different, I would expect the same to come from them.
In the end, I chose public school over private school. Things would certainly been different for me if I chose private. For the better or for the worse I don't know. But all I know is, I'm now a UBC student and graduated from highschool with strong academic standing so it all comes out to one's own efforts and one's environment. It all comes down to hardworking and luck. Don't just choose private school simply because you think your son will succeed better in it. There are alot of children that are forced into it and tend to do poorly because of a lack of adaptation to the private school learning environment. Posted via RS Mobile

Off topic but Milhouse, for some reason I always thought you were some high school kid!
Never would have expected you to have a kid.
Sorry. Carry on.

Posted via RS Mobile | This also sounds about right. I have many friends who went to Saints. Not all of them came out with stellar careers, but many also did. Ultimately its down to the person -- if they are extremely driven, a private school will have FAR more support and background research than stupid public school's CAPP program.
Many of the friends I had that went to private schools in Vancouver (and were driven) didn't even bother going to UBC/SFU after they graduated -- they wrote SATs and headed straight to high ranking American universities (e.g. USC/Yale/Harvard/Brown/MIT).

I went to Saints and highly recommend it. Granted, I cannot compare it with public school, but it seemed like the teachers really push you to succeed -- there were obviously a few fuck ups in my year (drinks & drugs) but every one of them went to university.
A family friend has a daughter at Crofton in grade 6 and the amount of extra-curricular activities available at a young age is staggering. I don't see how these kids could grow up to be anything but high achieving and ambition.

Went to HS in Alberta but my close friend went to Saints. He has given me a good perspective of private school versus my own public schooling.
I believe Private schooling does give you additional opportunities. However it is hard to quantify these benefits and sometimes they are only marginal. However where the difference is indisputable, is in competition and drive. You are immersed in an environment where everyone does extracurricular's, and strives for tier 1 schools. Having any sort of ambition in this environment will get you far.
At the same time most Saints grads and Crofton House grads, certainly have a sense of entitlement. This presents problems in the real world where a diverse environment of people are present that you need to interact with. This is the biggest disadvantage imo so its a cost/benefit analysis at this point for you.
