Looks like there will be lots of hiring for tradesman soon. Anyone working at Seaspan have an idea of what the tradesman rate of pay is at? Specifically a machinist and what yard they work out of?

When I left the shipyards in 2008, journeyman rate for 2012 was supposed to be $38/hour, they might have modified the agreement in order to make the bids more attractive. Chances are I'll be quitting school and going back there. Posted via RS Mobile | |

Watched this on the news last night. Whatshername, being a typical politician, was in there like a dirty shirt. At least she didn't take credit for it. Come election time, she's probably going to tell the public how her government created jobs, yada, yada, yada..........
I also like the fact that Harper made sure politics were kept out of the decision making process - no politician had their filthy hands in it. So happy for Nova Scotia. They really needed this.

I was actually doing this course for fun since I was waitlisted for Power Engineering.. But this came at such a perfect time, that I can't just pass this up.
Already finished ahead of more than half the class. I think I can do this job 
But they're probably looking for B/A levels. Doesn't hurt to try.

You can get in with your C as an apprentice. They will pay for all of your schooling and your wages while you are in school. You get to rotate as an apprentice through new construction, barge repair, pipe shop, cnc burning machine.
I got in with my C but they gave me a steel fab apprenticeship instead. 99.9% of the welding is ~3/8" plate dual sheilding fcaw. It's different than bcit. You can be jammed in some very small uncomfortable places. All the pipe work was contracted out on the last ferry and oil barge. Hopefully they will keep everything in house this time.

What other jobs are available?
How is the working condition there? Is the management bearable? Where I work has pretty bad safety record.

As for management, it comes down to you as a person. There are a lot of politics and you will get good jobs or shitty ones depending who you are "friends" with higher up.
Working conditions can be good or bad. Keep in mind all new construction you will be kneeling on steel plates for 8 hours a day wearing knee pads, bending over, working in a cold shop or confined space. You can also be outside working in snow or sitting on wet steel welding, or welding on a moving dock.
Safety there is unreal. They had some accidents years ago and now they really crack the whip on safety. All grinding is done with glasses and face sheilds. Lots of guys have been there 30 years and don't follow the rules. But as a young guy I followed every rule and yes the job takes longer and can be a hassle sometimes but you will never get bitched at for being safe. I remember a few days sitting around for 4 hours waiting for someone to write a permit to weld a sign. (all hotwork needs permits and if the safety people are busy you just stand there or walk around and look busy) It was very frustrating at times. But other times in the summer when you are on a barge on the ocean watching seals and getting a breeze, it's nice. Quote:

The rates are probably around $17-18ish entry level. But you get roughly ~$1.50 raise every 6 months if you are an apprentice. edit: another thing I didn't mention was they pay for your dental/medical etc. They also have a pension plan.

Yeah, benefits package is good. Also... if you use the gym, you may recognize a certain former Canucks coach/GM working out there sometimes. I haven't seen him in over a year tho...
