fuck the age requirement.

Ando 11-19-2011 03:47 PM

I drove by the Hellenic Community Center around 2pm and saw a line out the door, didn't bother to find parking.

Anyone made it in? How was it?

604Playa 11-19-2011 04:07 PM

heard the festival was a total bust!. Long line ups, and all poutine got sold out. ppl got their tickets refunded.

Sounds like it was not a bust, it was too popular hence the sell out.

Adrenaline Rush 11-19-2011 10:53 PM

I went at about 1:30pm and waited about 20 minutes. There was a guy who came out and said they were running out of poutine and that they were trying to restock, but there would be no guarantee that they could do it, so I left. Guess they couldn't restock...

I had some friends who had gotten in earlier and said it was decent but nothing that special. Bear in mind, this wasn't even the AYCE event, but just the community center open house day with poutine being sold for $5.

I think they need to get a bigger venue and more supplies for next year!

Obsideon 11-19-2011 10:56 PM

Haha I went to La Belle Patate last night for a poutine run around 2am, delicious!

Culverin 11-20-2011 12:32 AM

I went, rode in from North Burnaby, turns out they ran out...
Frozen hands could barely hold my handle bars...

Not super pissed though, ended up eating out elsewhere with some friends.

bloodmack 11-20-2011 01:12 AM

pretty much made my own poutine with some friends instead of going to the festival.

xmisstrinh 11-20-2011 09:29 AM

A group of us were the first ones waiting outside just before 6. We were greeted with "If you don't have a printed ticket, you won't be coming in!", not, hello or welcome.

During an announcement, a guy asked the crowd if people spoke French and maybe 5 people put up their hands and cheered. He then said the rest of us English-only people must be linguistically challenged. I almost wanted to go up to him and tell him he's in the wrong city to say that. Hippy man's mother was one of the organizers and kept reminding everyone about how they want this event to be zero waste, which is cool, but they also told people to hold onto their forks and the bar ran out of glassware by 8pm. They ended up having to send someone to Safeway across the street to pick up red plastic cups!

In terms of the poutine, it was like a line up from Oliver's Twist. Most of the crowd were just constantly in line waiting for poutine. People were lined up, some were huddled by the entrances so they could be the first ones to get some. It sounds ridiculous, but it was necessary if you wanted to get any! Some were tasty, but some of the portions in the little gelato cups were so small, it was disappointing. For an event that had..... Maybe 50-75 people, they didn't have enough glassware, and only had 2 fryers set up for the 500lbs of potatoes they were wanting to serve to the crowd. There was supposed to be 10 gourmet styles of poutine along with the classic one. We spent most of the time waiting because it took 30 minutes for each style to come out. Oh, and entertainment was crap.

We left after having the classic, Italian, Chinese and Japanese styles. 2 hours went by and we decided to leave. Some people had been there almost as long as we had and they hadn't had ANY poutine. At that rate, we would of been there until midnight waiting to try all 10 gourmet styles and still wouldn't of been satisfied because of the small portions. I heard some had left and demanded a refund, too. The event was so poorly organized and was such a disappointment for everyone a lot of people. While we left, one guy opened the door for us and asked how it was and some of my friends said it sucked and never again will we go to this kind of event.

Good thing I forgot about this... =\

Vansterdam 11-20-2011 12:09 PM

chinese and japanese poutine? lol wtf was in it

xmisstrinh 11-20-2011 12:56 PM

the chinese poutine was peking duck poutine served with a sweet sauce (hoisen right?) cheese curds, green onion and a shrimp cracker. it was actually quite tasty.

the japanese one was more like an imitation poutine. 10/10 for creativity but 3/10 for taste. it was deep fried taro, with a miso sauce with shitake mushrooms and bamboo shoots (i think) and the "cheese curds" were actually tofu. Wasn't very tasty, but the concept was interesting.

it was not a successful event. We were unsatisfied and asked for our money back. The guy turned it down and later on offered to put our names down for free admission next year. It was so bad we wouldn't even bother wasting our time next year.

Durrann 11-21-2011 10:33 PM

yikes and i wanted to go to this event too

Obsideon 11-22-2011 02:39 PM

Sounds like this event was quite the epic fail ... lucky I didn't make an extra effort to go!

I went there a while back, not impressed with the sandwich or poutine.

Are you sure that new Dunn's restaurant serves the EXACT same Smoked Meat Sandwich as Costco?... if so ... damn I was looking forward to trying this new famous shop... but I was very disappointed with the Costco sandwich... :considered:

Best Smoked Meat Sandwich I've had so far is at Le Belle Patate, you have to go before 9pm as they don't make it anymore later at night, but their poutine is excellent too!
