but i think the math was off.

wouldnt 120mph one way be equal to 60mph in opposing directions? because then the closing speed would be 120mph. i could be going about this totally back asswards though..

^ You're right. 120mph one way = 60mph both in opposite directions.
Regardless, it's pretty scary stuff.

^ Would be interesting to see such test. Two cars going at ~90km/h at each other.
That's roughly the average speed people drive in Lower Mainland's highways.

From a physic point of view, crashing a car moving at 120mph does not equal to 2 cars crashing at 60mph. Because there's more mass involved in the equation for the latter. Even though the pure force created is equal, the effect is very different.

Back to the OP, the video is crazy

go back to high school physics?

its pretty trivial to know that velocity relative to kinetic energy does not increase linearly

so 60km/h against another 60km/h does not equal 120km/h against a wall

easily proven with the silly high school physics 0.5m1v1^2 + 0.5m1v1^2 =/= 0.5m1(2*v1)^2

120mph = ~55m/s
Let's say 120mph to 0 in around 0.1 sec, that's what, 50 or so g's of force? Goddamn

The total energy should be the same, except when you hit a car against an immovable brick wall, 100% of the energy ends up hitting the car... (Where else when you hit 2 cars together, the energy is spread between the 2 cars)

A) 120mph car hitting a 0mph car = 60mph car -> <- 60mph car
B) 120mph car hitting a 0mph brick wall = 60mph car -> <-60mph brick wall
Damages on car: A =/= B

Speed and energy are both relative
your equation is looking at the vehicle speed from an OUTSIDER perspective...(which has nothing to do with the two cars colliding with one another)

since you are measuring the damages & energy on the vehicles, the correct frame of reference should be on the vehicles and not on you.

in the video they say the occupants experienced a peak of 400G's... if the trash compactor car doesn't kill you, your brain is liquid anyway...

It wouldnt matter what you are driving... your body experiencing a 400G acceleration is enough to prove fatal. The fact that your body then gets smushed is immaterial, you are already dead. This is typically what happens when you hear that a person was "dead on impact".

one 3000lb car travelling at 120mph has 1,957,998 Joules of kinetic energy.

one 3000lb car travelling at 60mph has 489,499 Joules of kinetic energy.

if 2 cars are travelling toward each other at 60mph the kinetic energy would be doubled which equals 978,998 Joules.

That is almost 1,000,000 Joules less then one car at 120mph.

And what is even more scary is that the wall has virtually no deflection and is stationary so basically all the energy will be transfered to the deformation of the one car.

In working with Transport Canada we found the average delta V of two cars having a head on collision on the highway was around 76km/h. That is, running a car into a crash test barrier at 76 km/h would subject the occupants to similar forces as a head on collision with another vehicle at 100km/h.

By your definition, you are still wrong.

If a car hits an immovable wall at 120mph, the car takes 100% of the hit, whereas if a 120mph car hits a 0mph car, the energy is spread into the 2nd car. Car =/= wall

On top of that, a 60mph car hitting a 60mph car means they are taking damage for their speed respectively. Sure one may take a bigger chunk of the hit than the other depending on circumstance, but its still two entities all the same.

Moreover, if you took physics in highschool (this is taught in Physics 11) It takes more energy to make an object more faster. It is not linear. Just check out Musky's math.

If I was a billionaire I'd buy a thousand ford focus's and strap death row inmates and generally evil criminals into them and have them collide at the highest speeds possible. I'd record my findings and make a movie out of it. It would me incredibly micheal bayplosion-esque. lots of sexy women running around, clever camera angles, backstories for all the criminals and maybe have a few gore shots in there...
