and thats just a two zone. unlike with your car you cant even go anywhere you like with it. if i didnt work dt i would drive; they dont try to use a good deal as an incentive, they just try to barely match the price

He's probably also factoring in purchasing power parity.

The same thing with the fare gates. Construction has already begun for the Expo line and apparently the Millenium line was already designed for these gates.

Didnt they claim its more expensive to run fare gates than letting people evade fare? Why they're doing this now?

That claim is based on the number of tickets given for fare evasion vs the estimated number of rides any given day.

Since we don't have a completely accurate method of tracking riders (no faregates, no way to check how many people actually get on), and since not everyone who evades pays a ticket (four people on my bus were busted today, only one pulled off for a ticket)...I, for one, don't trust either of those numbers.

Also, let's not forget that security barriers are not just about payment, they're also about SECURITY. Each and every station will now have at least one transit guard/transit cop at all times the station is open. You know how people say that it's hard to trace crime around the Skytrain stations because people can just commit a crime and then hop on two stations later? Or that being near a Skytrain station at night is dangerous 'cause nobody's around?

Yeah, that's gonna change.

Security aside, random sampling can be pretty accurate, and it's used in many, many areas. TBH, this should be a pretty easy problem for someone who does this for a living. Keep in mind the data gathering, report, etc was audited by PwC, so IMO, the numbers should be close enough.
