buying tires from USA ? hi, many people said buying tires from the states is cheaper.. i want to buy some tires from USA, but when i coming back to the canada border, how much tax am i expect to pay? and the USA sales tax, will i get it back from the border? how much money worth of items i can buy , or each passenger in my car, for each person, how much money can he each spend to avoid getting charged the tax? like if you buy more than $100, the rest you need to pay tax ... some may say just dont declare it,,, but i want to go the save way. |
lets say its $500 installed, included usa sales tax, and how much to pay in canada border? |

In my experience, even if I have to pay duty on bringing tires over, I still save money. Discounttiredirect.com Should be your favourite bookmark Posted via RS Mobile |

sorry to bump an old thread, but im having mix feelings of which tires to get and i rather not make a new thread and bug everyone lol im torn between 3 tires Continental DWS Kumho 4x Falken 912 now im hoping those of you who have any experience with these can give me a small description of why you liked said tire? im looking for something that will be good in the rain as i dislike it when im in an uphill and i end up spinning when i hit the gas a little hard. Thanks for all your help :) and these tires will most likely be bought in the states and still debating wether to install/balance em there or do that here. |
If you want something good in the rain, then Conti DWS is the obvious ticket. The Falken 912 would probably be dead last in this group. Quote:

Continental DWS hands down between the three. My only complaint are the sidewalls are a tad on the soft side. Other than that it's pretty good in light snow and other weather conditions for daily driving. Falken 912's in my opinion don't last long when it comes to tread life. At most 60k or less based on my experience. |
On $500 you will pay $60 in tax upon import. If you piss of the officer for some reason you will pay as much as $125 in duty and tax. Posted via RS Mobile |
^So you're saying tax is calculated by the officer's mood? :suspicious: You pay 12% on the value of your goods, and applicable duties if your tires were made outside of anywhere with a free trade agreement. Pirelli's will have duty, bridgestones will not. It has NOTHING to do with an officer's mood. |
Alright thanks for all the help guys. By the looks of it the dws is the best in everyone's book haha but I'm going to give the 4x a try this time around. Hearing couple of friends who have used both say that although the 4x doesn't match up to the dws it's almost there :p but the only way to find out is to try em right? Ill give the dws a shot next time. Thanks again! Posted via RS Mobile |
had the falken 912, lasted 60k, still had tread left. it was good in the rain, sucked in the snow, good in the dry. quiet till they wore down. they were terrible in the snow, even a light dusting. dry grip was getting worse the closer i got to the wear bars. i have the dws now and they are way better than the 912 in every way. i hope they last longer than the 912. i just increase the air pressure to compensate for the soft sidewalls. kumhos i've never had luck with. wore out fast, tire pulls, couldn't get them to balance right. |
^ I've had two sets of 912, one for each car. Both were terrible in the rain. |
That is exactly what I meant. Officers very rarely charge someone duties although the majority of goods imported are dutiable good. When you are sent inside, it is almost always for tax and tax only. 12%. If you piss off an officer or you get busted for a customs contravention, the officer has the option of seizing or charging you duties & tax. Hence my earlier statement, don't piss them off. Quote:
