Picking up a set of rims/tires from the USA tomorrow...question: border declaration

so looks like my set of wheels/tires will be ready for pickup tomorrow...these are brand new and i wont be mounting them down there so will drive them across stored in trunk... upon declaring value/etc..what should I expect at the border? pay taxes? they are japanese rims but not sure if customs will inspect them to that degree. any other unforeseen charges i should prepare for?
What about paperwork aside from the invoice ?

thanks.

Fully declare the full value and you will either:
a) be waived through without having to pay anything
b) have to go in to pay HST on the value of the rims/tires
c) have to go in to pay HST & duty on the value of the rims/tires

If you're not planning to declare the full value:
Prepare to bring lube.

What you paid per invoice, as long as you have proof of that price (i.e. transaction records, invoice, receipt etc.)

I normally hand the border guy in the booth my invoice and passport at the same time. 50% of the time I get waved though and the other I have to go inside to pay. Last time I picked up a set of coilovers and got though without having to pay anything. So it depends on who it is and if they feel like being nice that day or no.

Good luck!

I brought in two sets of used wheels. Paid duty only once. All depends when you go, who you get, and how you handle yourself. I always expect to pay. It's a nicer feeling when they wave you through

Sometimes they'll tell you to pull over just to verify the invoice, and wave you through after wasting 30 mins of your time.

Your experience depends on your CBSA agent. Both have agents who are strick and others who are lenient.

It's really a toss up. Heads or tails?

Here are my stats
Peace arch: 2/2 peace arch is a bit out of the way for me, but I got charged both times I went to pick car parts
Pacific: 3/17

My preference is pacific. You can never tell.
Last time I went to pick up rotors, brakes, lines etc $600 worth of goods. My girlfriend followed me since she needed gas.
She was right behind me in the same booth. I declared all my goodies and got waved through.
She got pulled into secondary inspection just for getting gas which she has done before since I live fairly close to the border.

When we picked up our wheels and tires at Point Roberts, the guard asked us where they were produced. We had no idea, so we straight up told him we are unsure, and we gave him the invoice and the pick up order from TSB.

I've never been charged anytime I've been to the Peach Arch but then again, I have not used Pacific very often either.

I know friends who are the same. Never at Peach Arch but always tagged at Pacific.

Tires have the country of manufacture printed on them, and your rims are admittedly not from North America... I'm pretty sure auto parts are 6% duty, yet tires/wheels may be in their own category.

what did when I bought my rims,

make a few small payments instead of one large one on your paypal,

lets say 2000 dollar rims, make 4 payments for 500,

then print out one 500, bring that with you,

when they ask you about the rims, tell them you got them refinished and you picked them up from the mail center.

when they ask you how much? you say 500, show him the receipt.

this is exactly what I did, and I got through without paying anything,

ive smuggled thousands and thousands of dollars over the border and have never gotten taxed or duty'd,

there is a different technique for every kind of car part you want to smuggle.

hell even when I spent 500 bucks on race gas, and brought it back in barrels, they still didnt tax me or pull me over

^ Thanks for coming out and testifying against yourself in a public forum that needs no pwd to access.

Just declare it, most of the time you are waved through for a category 4 (auto parts) under 1000 dollars.

I haven't paid CBSA a dime for parts for a few years now I just declare everything. They ended up searching me one time when I came back from Walmart instead that was a real waste of time....

$400 in tax? That must have included the 6% duty right?

testifiying?

lol, you honestly think the border patrol cares about a few wheels and some car parts? your an idiot.

if you make it easy for them to tax you, they will, if you dont, they wont, they are just people in the end, and they arent going to go out of their way to disprove you out of 1000 bucks,

that is the whole purpose of the nexus pass too, you declare all your receipts, and you get taxed on them all, because its easy for them to do that.

they care about cash, drugs, and weapons,

not that sweet spoiler you bought for your car,

if you declare the full ammount, and its a sizable sum, they will tax you, that is in their job description, if you declare a little ammount, and make it believable, they wont bother you.

ofcourse you will get the random search, which happend to me once a couple years back,

I literally had brand new car parts in box's that I didnt declare, and they didnt even care about it, didnt even question me on it, its not worth their time to even bother, they were looking for drugs and weapons, they dont give a shit about parts.

another trick to look out for is try and get a border guard that is the same race as you, this may seem harsh / racist, but it helps wonders

if your a brown guy, try and go to the lineup with the brown guard, asian / asian, white / white, each race looks after their own. if your a white guy, or and brown guy, and you come up to an asian guard, he's going to give you a harder time guarantee'd

also the opposite sex, if your a guy, try and get a girl, if your a girl, try and get a guy,

the windows are tinted somewhat, but you can still make it out before you get in line.

gets me through the borders 100% of the time with no problems

Just take the full invoice, as much as you have as possible ( from both the site and your paypal say ) and neatly tidied up and stapled and highlight the final prices if you have time for that. Don't act like a douche and you should be fine pay the taxes if they ask you to, but sometimes if they're nice they'll just be like ok go through. Happened to me when I picked up my WORK emotions.

Can't remember, might have been, but our dollar was much less than par back then. Maybe it was $300 something, I remember that the wheels were $2200USD, and after everything it was around $2600.

Not sure what the exchange rate was back then...but at $2200,
Your HST should have only been $264
Sounds like u got dinged by another $132 for 6% duty.
Which comes to $396....roughly four hundred bucks.
