If you just want the HDD as storage just buy those External ones form FS or bestbuy and take it out form the USB casing. That's what I did. Got a 3TB HD external HD form Bestbuy and just took the USB casing out.

Where are they selling external HDD's cheaper than the HDD by itself?

FYI you can't price match sales with very limited stock (like a door crash or boxing day sale).
BTW I saw a good deal today at the bellingham costco, 3TB WD Essential USB3.0 external hard drive on sale for $109.99.
