Easy to use, plays everything Blu-Ray player?

I don't think it's that bad of a question.. Alot of Sony bluray players I've come across have a hard time reading various formats and have a hard time playing some burned content

PS3 all day. Set it for auto-login and auto-play disc, buy the BluRay remote and boom.

It's a little more expensive, so right off the bat you're paying more than you need to

Then, as soon as there's a firmware update, or if they accidentally hit a button to take them back to the XMB, they'll be like

Then they'll hit a bunch of buttons that doesn't play the video again and they'll be like

Then you'll get a call about how 'the movie is broken', and you'll think

But you're probably related to them, so then you'll have to fix it and be like


I would just go with a basic player from costco or something. Most of the cheaper ones without things like network streaming and netflix are nice and simple because they don't have other features.

The issue with Blu Ray Players - is that you WILL have to run updates once in a while or you will encounter problems with new movies you can't play. At least with a PS3, it's not hard to set up - and connect to your network.

if you want it to play different formats, then it's probably best to get a PS3 for future proofing.

currently, you can get blu-ray players that can play DivX or Xvid. but they can't do every video codec. with a PS3, you can install "PS3 media server" or TVersity on your PC and then stream to your PS3 (via wifi or cat5). this way, when a new file format comes out, your PC can be updated with a simple software patch/install.

TVersity is the easier program to install and set up on your PC.

another solution is to purchase a laptop with an HDMI output and a built-in blu ray player. watch movies and other downloaded content on your laptop, and just spit the signal out to your TV via HDMI.

and theres some dirt cheap ones like magnavox funai etc that are actually made by 1 company and you can play discs from different regions (theres only 3 region codes when it comes to blu-rays and very few movies are actually locked) i cant remember the model # though or if they're still available the issue with these is firmware updates

but those players will also play MKV files etc either burnt on a disc or from a usb stick


havent looked into players in a long time though since im fine with just using my PS3 or laptop for region locked discs



id suggest the PS3 and buy a Remote for it did that for my dad since he hated using the ps3 controller and is far more familiar with using a remote
when they become more familiar with the unit they'll even be able use the other capabilities of the ps3 like renting movies or surfing the web etc

I don't think this is a bad question; people who failed the OP are idiots themselves.

Quite frankly, the PS3 sucks as a Blu-Ray player. (I have one myself and it's my only Blu Ray player.) It's slow, you have to buy a bloody bluetooth dongle to use it with any universal remotes such as a Harmony, and there's no LED display. I'd appreciate some suggestions for a standalone and quick Blu Ray player.

I'm looking for a Bluray player for my parents. Hence the "easy to use" portion of the original question.

There's such a huge variety of players out there these days, but not guaranteed to play a multitude of codecs considering back in the day, you could get a DVD player that could play a lot of stuff.

Reason for the different codecs is because sometimes my parents get a hold of discs that are sourced from weird places and it would be best if they could just pop it in and play.

last time i looked into it the PS3 was still the fastest @ loading and future-proof (think about its a generation 1 blu-ray player and it can even do 3D)

budget wise that plays multiple regions and formats Insignia NS-WBRDVD2 $130 <<< (latest firmware removes the multi-region capability but you can install an older firmware version to regain the function) thats only if you're concerned with playing region b/c blu-ray discs

Samsung blu-ray players seem to be able to convert Pal content to work on their US players (for pal dvds and or pal special features on a bluray disc)

it gets a little complex on what youre looking for (multi-region blu-ray? pal content? divx/mkv/etc capability/etc? firmware support? 3d? fast load times? dvd-audio disc/sacd support? analog outputs? ) you cant really find an all around perfect player unless you're doing an htpc thats why the PS3 is still considered the best (futureproof has the most support all in one but it still lacks some things like pal/multi-region/mkv support)

When did u buy your PS3? The first 2-3 years of blu ray availability had slow ass players. But now there are a lot standalone Blu ray players now that load blu ray movies faster. You can look on CNET. I agree with u on the future proofing part.

I bought a simple $99 one from costco for my parents since they also get the amazing costco return policy. I just had a system update the other day and it went like this:

Turn on player
First screen: "There is an Update", Two buttons: Update Now? or Update Later?
Click OK (Update Now is already selected)
Player reboots, ready to go.

I love having the PS3 as my blu ray player, but i would never buy that for my parents.

Good to know that current models are quicker. It would be nice to just play a movie without having to boot the PS3 too.

It probably takes 2 minutes to get into a Blu Ray movie on a PS3 which is painfully long.

better than having to explain that no matter what, their player won't play a certain disc because it's too new.

Buy one from Costco. I remember their cheap DVD players used to play everything. I also bought a HP blu-ray from Costco a year ago (can't remember model number), but it plays everything as well. It even has a setting (haven't tried yet) where you can change region code settings.

i have a basic question about 3D blu-ray
i'm about to pick a set that only includes 3D blu-ray not the regular blu-rays
i am planning to play it on my PS3 with HDMI 1.3b (i think it's b) on a non-3d HDTV

will it run okay?

uhm as far as i know it depends on the movie disc


some include both streams (2d/3d) on 1 disc some others include a separate disc for each

i imagine if its 3d only it includes both streams im not sure though
