Data Recovery!!!

so i have a small external 2.5inch WD HDD...
it's pretty old, like maybe 4-5 years old.

I hardly ever use it, but i put it in a few months ago and it just starts clicking.

fuck i know that sound.

so basically it's dead.

but i have some pretty important information on there, and im willing to pay decent money to recover it.

now... there's a buncha companies that recover data when i google it, but im also reading most of them are not professional.

u guys know any PROFESSIONAL data recovery? with good rep.

i know a few years back it was ridiculously expensive, and prices have dropped since then... there's gotta be a few out there? what about locally? canada? I don't mind shipping the drive to the states if i have to.

1st Data Recovery, clean room data recovery service.

I recommend them all the time even at work. Lots of success stories from some very important people here in Vancouver.

Looking at their straight forward rates,
Digital memory cards up to 3GB is $250 flat.

We all know a 4GB memory card isn't exactly 4GB....somewhere in the 3.xx range.
And I'm pretty sure the memory card wasn't at 100% full.

Would they charge you the $250 price? or $500 price?

Put it in a freezer professionally after putting it professionally in ziploc bag.

Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

The file list the gave me was no better than the GetDataBack software that I used instead. I think GetDataBack is now called Recover My Files.

That software recovered everything they said they could, and was only $70.

I wouldn't recommend 1st Data Recovery to anyone unless a) they had an extra $400 lying around or b) they weren't technically inclined enough to plug in a hard drive and run the software.

Uhh wouldn't you have realized that you should start backing stuff up after the 1st one died? let alone 3 more? Or did they all die at the same time??

They also charge you a whooping $45 just to get your original drive back too.

The reason why I often tell clients to go to 1stdatarecovery (or any professional data recovery shops) is because I don't want to be liable to damages, or because they really want their files back.

I have GetDataBack for NTFS and FAT as well. The program works very well. But there are often times where people really want their files back and don't want to try out these software at the risk of further damaging the drives.

At this point, you have to decide if you want to take a chance, or leave the chance with someone else.

Yeah, that's a good point. If it's a client, it's safer to go through someone else.
However, usually I tell my friends/family that I can do it for free, but there's no guarantee on what I can get back. Or they could pay someone $500, and there's still no guarantee what they'll get back. To some it's worth it, to some it isn't I guess.

He is serious. Put the drive in a ziploc bag and make sure the seal is tight since you don't want ANY moisture getting in. After it's chilled, take it out and plug it in again to see if it reads any better.

The first time I did that, I didn't even use a ziploc bag, just put it straight in the freezer.. that was a pretty huge fail.

Pretty serious... 2 of my friends were able to have enough time to move the data off the disk after the freezing method. The method doesn't save the disk, it just give you a bit of time for you to transfer what you need on the disk.

Did the freezer trick a couple of times to transfer data off. Worked pretty well but once the drive heated up again it stopped working so I put the drive next to the AC and got most of the files back.
