Chinese Farmer Giving Away Free Turnips Plundered by Mob

Chinese Farmer Giving Away Free Turnips Plundered by Mob
by Fauna on Monday, December 5, 2011

From NetEase, QQ, & Mop:

The over 80 mu of turnips grown by farmer Han Gang on his vegetable farm on the outskirts of Zhengzhou in Henan province yielded a bountiful harvest, but these roughly 1.5kg each turnips suffered from poor sales. Day after day, he contacted buyers, but the buyers would only offer a bulk purchasing price of only 4-5 fen per half kilogram. If people are hired to pick the turnips, he’d then have to spend even more money. After discussing with his family, he decided to stop trying to sell these turnips and instead give them away to the city’s residents for their consumption. Han Gang said: “If social welfare and charity organizations want them, I can give them priority.”

Han Gang posted his idea online and news media from the provincial capital also published the information on November 25th. On the morning of 2011 November 26th, Han Gang’s turnip field was overrun by city residents there to pick turnips, with groups and groups of people carrying vegetable knives hacking turnips off, tossing aside those they didn’t like and bagging those they did to take home.

For days, over ten thousand city residents came to the field to pick turnips.

What Han Gang and his family did not expect was that some people even picked and took away the sweet potatoes he had planted. Given that he was unable to stop them, he could only ferret out the uncivilized behavior by immediately taking out the sweet potatoes that those people had put into their bags.

Faced with an uncontrollable situation, Han Gang begged people to be merciful: “Auntie, sister, uncle, brother, leave me some, I still need to send my children to school!”

November 26th, Zhengzhou, the cars and tricycles of the turnip pickers lined up for kilometers.

November 26th, a police vehicle appears on Han Gang’s turnip field.

Various different types of cars on the scene.

A van that drove directly onto the turnip field, the young turnips run over into a mess.

Using both big bags and small bags to take [the turnips] away.

Riding a mountain bike to come pick turnips.

Ruined sweet potatoes.

Photo is of November 26th, of a city resident walking a dog on Han Gang’s turnip field.

This guy will never hold a charity again. I feel bad for the guy. The decent thing would've been to donate at least .50 cents per turnip.

Typical. They don't give a shit to other people's properties.

"Give an inch and they take a mile". Exactly that.

After they take the mile, they'll come back to see if there's more. I'm pretty sure it's not isolated to Chinese people, but damn, shit gets fucked up whenever a freebie happens and Chinese people are involved. One local event that comes to mind was when there were frozen pizzas being given away. I can't remember the brand, but I recall all the people acquiring multiple freebies were Chinese. Some were hauling a bag in each hand. I don't think the pizza was that great either.

Chinese people!! Y U SO SELFISH! ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

Reminds me of that guy who had a cruel prank pulled on him. Someone posted a Craigslist Ad saying his apartment is full of stuff that people were free to take. People showed up just emptying his apartment - and even had the audacity to just wave a printed copy of the CL ad when they were asked to stop. People have a mob mentality everywhere, it's not just China.

^

but honestly a lot of these stereotypes are perfectly applicable to chinese people. i've been to places all over the world and i've yet to come across a race that's as selfish and ignorant as the chinese. all they care about is themselves and how to fuck the next person so they can step over them. of course there are exceptions but this is generally what i see, and i'm from mainland china myself lol.
