Recommend a cheap and reliable car for a friend of mine...

Hey people.

A friend of mine has hit on hard times in the east coast of the US. Her car was a 94 Explorer whose front end, quote, "disintegrated" from rust. Now, we all know american cars are bad.

She's got $1500 or so. I suggested mid-90s corolla, accord, or civic. Is that correct? I also told her to run away from american cars.

How accurate is my advice? Thanks!

An import wouldn't last a month in the east coast....

LOL @ your American cars are bad comment.

Those cars you recommended will be worse than an American car in the snow and salt, what the fuck are you thinking?

GM has solid metal.

+1 on Volvo, a late 80's 240 series.

-1 on VW. Sure they're diesel's are great but not so reliable...

I grew up on the east cost (Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia)... If it rusts, It will rust. Only way to prevent it is to clean your car better and get any damage properly repaired. just find a reliable car that has little to no rust and continue to take care of it

another + recommendation for a 90's Volvo.

Make sure its an N/A engine if you want reliability.

an import will have more rust issues than an explorer, and also a big factor is safety. As much as I like civics and corollas, I just dont feel safe in them. A friend of mind has survive two high speed crashes because he was driving a Volvo both times. Both times he has come out scratch/injury free. This is why i stick to bigger european cars only.

Good luck on your search.

She's in her 40s, three kids. You don't want pictures.

I can't believe I forgot about Volvos. Should she get the fugly ones from the late 80s?

@RRxstar: Didn't even think about the salt part, since that's what likely caused it in the first place. Whoops.

What I really like about the Volvo's (don't know if this applies to the exports), they have a nice coating of cavity wax in the boxes and around the seams.

These things are super reliable and bulletproof
Mine is currently at 406,000km, nothing major maintenance-wise just basic servicing!

^ Cars are just cars, if it's not cleaned and maintained it's gonna rust regardless.
Please, recommend a car for your "east coast weather"

SHe just has to keep on top of cleaning the car and washing the salt off.
Which is pretty tough when you have kids.

if it doesn't get cleaned its gonna rust no matter what. In Ontario I saw 3 year old vehicles with rusty ass trunks/hatches, and cars from the 80's with no rust. it's all about how you take care of it... if it doesn't have rust when she buys it,. regardless of where it was made, and she maintains it, it'll be fine.
