Mix Matching Ram

Gonna add a bit of ram to my setup

Right now I have g.skill PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 2gb kit

Would it mess up the setup if I get a 8gb kit and and run both?
Different brand same speed?

To be more clear i have 2x 1gb sticks
Gonna get another kit with 2x 4gb sticks

both ddr3-1600

would that be ok?

Nlkko 12-08-2011 10:15 PM

I dont see why not. I've done that before and as long as it's compatible, it's not gonna be a problem.

gars 12-08-2011 10:23 PM

check the timing, and the voltage as well. If they're rated for different voltages, you'll have a problem. The timing - if they're the same, great, if not - you might have to down the timing to the slowest pair.

PornMaster 12-10-2011 04:50 PM

Failed.

bought Kingston 2x4gb same speed similar voltage 1.6 vs 1.65

no video output
tried everything even switching all ram out. 1 at a time.

I think mobo only supports 2gb sticks
but it says max mobo can handle 16gb

roastpuff 12-10-2011 05:01 PM

1.65 and 1.6 is not the same. You need RAM running at the same Voltage...

PornMaster 12-10-2011 05:02 PM

but thing is even if I install 1 stick
it wont boot video

kchan 12-10-2011 06:24 PM

in bios, was your ram setting on AUTO or did you manually set it to 1.xx before hand when/if you oc'd your comp

why i ask is because what happened to me (a long long time ago, like AMD Athlon 2500 / P4 days) I had ram voltage manually setted up and when I purchased a different set of ram (which ran at diff voltage) it fried my mobo at the time
it wouldnt boot, make lots of beeps no videos nothing

but i dont think its the case here

PornMaster 12-10-2011 06:37 PM

Its probably auto but ill check.

the thing is there is no beep sound or anything computer boots but no video at all.
tried diff video sockets

SkinnyPupp 12-10-2011 06:44 PM

Mixing different sticks almost never works. Unless everything is identical, don't bother. Besides, going from 8GB to 10GB isn't going to be a huge deal anyway.

PornMaster 12-10-2011 06:46 PM

its 4gb to 8gb

the thing is even when I take out the 2x2gb sticks and put in the new 2x4gb sticks it still doesnt load video.

I wouldn't mind throwing the old ram away and having 8gb

SkinnyPupp 12-10-2011 06:54 PM

You said you have a 2GB kit and an 8GB kit. You said you wanted to use all 4 sticks. That would be 10GB.

But it sounds like your problem isn't that (yet) since the 8GB kit doesn't work by itself.

So for now, forget about the 2GB kit and try getting the 8GB kit to work. First try running one stick at a time, to see if one of them is bad.

PornMaster 12-10-2011 06:56 PM

my bad lol my old kit is 2x2gb = 4gb

will try

PornMaster 12-10-2011 07:07 PM

No good, 1 stick doesnt work with any of the 4 slots.

Power goes through everything but no video, no beep, keyboard and mouse no power.

Ughh fustrating

SkinnyPupp 12-10-2011 07:11 PM

Did you try both sticks?

PornMaster 12-10-2011 07:16 PM

yea both sticks.... all 4 slots.
old ram works fine all 4 slots each stick

You haven't said what your motherboard is or anything like that

bloodmack 12-10-2011 07:34 PM

Should just get the same ram no matter what. Especially if you OC, and make sure its all the way in, i make that mistake all the time.. (thats what she said :lawl:)

I make sure its in all the way
makes the clicking sound and double check the sides if secure

SkinnyPupp 12-10-2011 08:41 PM

Did you reset the BIOS before turning it on with the new ram?

StaxBundlez 12-10-2011 09:28 PM

skinnypups got a point. Why do you only want to upgrade just an extra two?

I say crank it to 16 and sit back and enjoy. But yes the specs have to match.

PornMaster 12-10-2011 10:30 PM

How do I reset bios
Posted via RS Mobile

PornMaster 12-10-2011 11:24 PM

ok I reset cmos and the main boot screen shows.
I set bios to default and same problem occurs.

Gonna try setting default with no ram inside and then seat the ram see how it goes

PornMaster 12-10-2011 11:34 PM

No good same problem.
Guess ill just return the ram tomorrow

PornMaster 12-10-2011 11:38 PM
