Asian Glow: A Sign for Esophageal Cancer Risk

Quote:

Approximately 36% of East Asians (Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans) show a characteristic physiological response to drinking alcohol that includes facial flushing, nausea, and tachycardia [1] . This so-called alcohol flushing response (also known as “Asian flush” or “Asian glow”) is predominantly due to an inherited deficiency in the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) [2]. Although clinicians and the East Asian public generally know about the alcohol flushing response, few are aware of the accumulating evidence that ALDH2-deficient individuals are at much higher risk of esophageal cancer (specifically squamous cell carcinoma) from alcohol consumption than individuals with fully active ALDH2.
didn't get a chance to critique the actual article..but it's interesting nonetheless...doubt you'll stop drinking altogether. Probably not much relevance here as someone pointed out RS is mostly blacks/hispanics :concentrate:

being asian i get these effects even when i try to build some tolerance. I don't bother with antacid as that purely masks the effects. :5shots:

My wife's brother lights up like a lamp after just 1 or 2 drinks. It was hilarious walking around tokyo drinking during the day, store keepers were literally scared of the red faced chinese guy and the tattooed white guy when we'd walk in :joy:

dad got me one of those beer samplers at a brewery beside a cruise port, drank it, walked in, and people in the elevator said 'you were partying hard eh?'

I don't get as red after a period of hard drinking and build up my tolerance once I stop drinking for awhile I flush up after 1 drink again. What does that mean?

SkinnyPupp 01-05-2012 06:39 AM

It means you better keep drinking all the time or you'll get CANCER

Hehe 01-05-2012 07:51 AM

I don't glow but don't enjoy too much booze except a cold beer in summer.

But I do remember that when I started drinking, my cousin used to chug bottles and bottles of beer down my throat trying to see me glow. He said, "if you ain't turning red, you haven't had enough booze". That ideology put me through several blackouts and :Puke:

I guess at the rate of their researches go, there will be no food in our life that doesn't cause cancer.

unit 01-05-2012 08:33 AM

most of my friends are asian and i only know about maybe 3-4 people who turn really red after drinking

GabAlmighty 01-05-2012 09:47 AM

Good thing i'm not Asian then? :e-shrug:

Matlock 01-05-2012 01:57 PM

I am of Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino ancestry.

I don't turn red when I drink.

It must be the Filipino.
