| Help; how to take off a spoiler lip mounted w/ 3m tape?
I had this spoiler installed by a shop and it's been on my car for about 10 months or so, the last piece is held on only by 3m tape (and possibly some adhesive promoter or something?). I got the side pieces off but the middle piece is stuck there pretty damn tight :/ I've used floss for my emblems and stuff and it just snaps like nothing after a few seconds on this. I've bought fishing wire as well and tried using a heat gun to heat it up beforehand, but the fishing wire still gets stuck and then snaps after a few seconds. I've also tried sticking a hard card under there to try to get the tape to unstick but it only worked for a few cm and that was it. I got about 1/4 of the tape off and the rest won't really budge at all.
Anyone have any tips on what I could do to get it off?
Here's a picture of it, it's a replica Mugen RR 4 piece wing |

You sure you got all the bolts off? 3M tape is a pain, try prying up an edge and use a razor blade, exacto knife or preferbally a putty knife. Just start cutting away at it slowly putting pressure upwards so you can get to more. Just be careful on the paint though as it takes nothing to scratch it up really bad.

ooh, 3m tape is boss, too boss actually... i found out the hard way
you'll be lucky if you get this off without any damage to the paint on your trunk...
the only thing that worked for me was using plastic razor blades, they're basically exactly what they sound like except made of different types of plastic.... I bought a few different kinds at a paint & plastics store in Richmond right off of knight st hwy and #5 road you pass MCdonalds and turn into that Starbucks parking lot, and a few shops next to Starbucks is Industrial Paint & Plastics I think it's called....
go in there and right on the counter they got 3 or 4 different kinds of plastic razors, I forgot which kind worked the best so just buy 2 of each, they're like $2 each....
once you get this razor part on the 3M tape just go back and forth and slice away, it will cut through the tape but you still have the problem of nasty residue on your trunk, for that you're gonna need a LOT of elbow grease, since the only thing really strong enough to get it off is paint thinner, and you can't really dump paint thinner on your trunk

Honestly if you need to buy anything to do it you might as well take it to a body shop and let them deal with so they dont scratch it. It will be fairly cheap

I'm pretty sure the shop didn't use any bolts to bolt it down, and I didn't notice any when I was looking from inside my trunk either. Damn.. I'm kind of scared to use anything hard like a putty knife or any kind of knife on my trunk lol. Seems like it might be the only way though if I do it myself :/
For the residue I've used a bunch of goo gone and rubbing with my fingers before lol. I'm scared to imagine what it'll be like for this since it looks like the shop used 3m tape around all the edges.
Looks like I'm going to be taking it to a shop or scratching up my trunk lol, good thing I have a oem spoiler lip to cover it up after. Thanks for the help guys |
