r u going to be putting the camera indoors or outdoors? that makes a difference in price and size, and also, at the very minimum, ull need to run power wires. also, since u live in a townhouse, make sure ur allowed to install the camera outside since most townhouse strata rules dont allow u to do shit to the exterior of the houses.
if its inside, then look into something called ip cams, theres many different brands out there, and most of them r wireless, high resolution and offers remote view via internet browsers and iphone app.
i have 2 of these in white, they were around $1200HKD each iPUX

Contact Jonathan in sales @ VONNIC (Toll Free: 1.888.986.6642) and tell him you're from Vancouver. I met him through some friends here in LA. He's based out of the US office but does sales regularly to Canada. They even have a Canadian distributor to help you avoid duties etc.
I've seen their products work in real-time. Really good products and support!

here, this is pretty much IDENTICAL to the camera i have, which i believe most cameras r made by the same manufacture, just rebranded. Trendnet TV-IP422WN SecurView Wireless N DAY/NIGHT Pan Tilt Zoom Internet Camera - TRENDnet - TV-IP422WN
its on sale too, the more expensive ones offer pan/tilt while the cheaper ones dont

You can't use either of those cameras indoors looking out through a window - the IR LEDs will reflect off the glass and wash out the image. In fact, aiming a camera through the window is always fail at night, as ANY light inside will reflect off the glass.
Don't waste your money on wireless cameras - you still have to power the thing, and you're paying extra for reduced reliability. Go wired and just be done with it.

Yeah the outdoor camera is a must. I have the same issue. Some asshole likes to key my car. Did the ICBC thing once to get it fixed and a few weeks later it happened again at the same spot. Outdoor camera is probably gonna cost as much as my deductable. And since I rent not much I can do about installing a camera and wiring outdoors. So I've basically got a permanent scratch on the hood as the bastard tends to leave it alone if I don't fix it.

i've been advised before to install motion sensor lights. not only do they deter thieves, they can also provide adequate lighting for your outdoor camera. I haven't seen really ballin' systems, but the IR/night ones that seemed affordable produced pictures with people that did not seem too recognizable to me.

Costco has a motion light with a built camera. Records video onto a SD card when the motion light comes on. Costs around $70.
