need a cure for laggy computer

My HP PC has been really laggy for the last few months.
It's mostly online stuff such as videos, they are just choppy and hard to watch. Or in Windows media player and so on.

no problems with big programs like photoshop or editing HD 1080p video.

basic info on stock factory HP:
AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 630 Processor 2.80 GHz
6GB DDR3 ram
HP PC 64bit Windows 7
1TB hard drive... about 8-10% full.

It just seems like its really clogged. Any good cleaning programs or anything specific that will help? I don't think I really need anything upgraded performance wise.
I used Error Fix if anyone knows what that is on my old PC but didn't have a lag issue then.
When I first got it just a little over a year ago it was super quick. Its been slowly going down hill since.

any help will be great thanks..

try ccleaner to clean up all your useless junk and registry.

FerrariEnzo 01-27-2012 04:40 AM

you could use Auslogics BoostSpeed... it has many options... including defrag, registry cleaner, HDD cleaner and so on...

whitev70r 01-27-2012 06:36 AM

It may be video card or your connection speed. Try playing a video through DVD player. If video is still choppy, try a new video card. If not, and only online video is still choppy, then you may need to up your broadband speed.

add a SSD. done

m3thods 01-27-2012 08:57 AM

If it's that bogged down, why not take the opportunity to back your vital data and perform a system restore? With most OEM computers, it's no more than an hour then you're back and running. I find that always fixes things, as opposed to finding more programs that usually do mediocre jobs at speeding up your computer.

Or like Turbo said, invest in an SSD. But I think with your particular setup, you should go back to system default, the clone it over to the SSD. You won't regret it. :fullofwin:

A Mac isn't the be-all, end-all, but they just don't slow down like a PC does after being used for awhile. They simply don't require formats to stay running, and they don't get viruses and bloatware.

You fail me because you're jelly? :troll:

I failed you because I work with macs everyday, and they are absolute shit in an enterprise environment / taking them apart and fixing them.

I hate macs with a passion, fuckin hipsters.

In fact macs are so shitty, we are now getting rid of them all at work, in replacement of PCs.

No sane person would have a mac at home, and only people who are retarded get virus' and spam on their PC's,

I havent reformated my pc in 3 years since I built it, and I've never gotten virus, and I run no protection except the router firewall.

Dont want to turn this into a mac vs pc debate, but the only argument you people use is "no viruses",

stop trying to download free porn and opening love emails and you wont get virus' on PC's either,

or perhaps you like the OSX interface? if thats really the case, you can install OSX on a PC.

or perhaps you like paying 2 grand for an apple logo? if so all the power to you, il still fail you everytime for trying to promote a shitty product,

I will admit though they do look cool and sleek, thats what attracts the general consumer.

^ proper brah!

exotic I'm running AVG with AVG Tune Up, the Tune Up has by far the most optimizing and useful options out of any software I have ever used, and they're not just for show either they actually work.
over 20+ and some me like disk registry maintenance, software control, internet optimization, system tweaks and my favorite feature is the recommendation one, where you run it and it tells you all the shit that's running on your pc as a service slowing you down that you don't really need or use...

I used to think computers were cool and worth my time tinkering with, but I've grown out of that phase so now I just keep all my important files on an external HD and when shit like this starts happening, I take a short time to try and fix it but I usually end up telling it to go fuck itself and find myself re-installing windows completely instead of spending days or weeks wasting time trying to fix it...

I don't have a Mac because I can't master the complexities of operating a PC. I don't have a Mac because I am inexplicably drawn to shiny things with white packaging and big logos. I don't have a Mac because I am brainwashed to think that only Apple products can work well.

I have a Mac because it simply works!
I am a busy professional - time costs money. I don't deny that a Mac is more expensive for the same set of hardware as a generic PC, however, it is valuable to me to have a computer that never has driver issues, doesn't get viruses, doesn't slow due to an overinflated registry, and has exceptional warranty service. My Macbook Pro also has an exceptional screen, phenomenal battery life, and looks great - these are all worthwhile to me.

You appear to be in tech support and I wouldn't want to try and repair the hardware on a Mac either, but I haven't ever had to, and am confident that should I ever have a problem, I can walk in and out of an Apple store in short order with a replacement product.

Just because YOU can't justify a Mac, doesn't make those of us who can, idiots. It's the same reason that they have sold 100,000,000 iPhones worthwhile while you can get an Android phone that does many of the same features for less money - many of us simply value a one stop solution.

This is my whole point, right here. I used to do this too, now I don't worry about an external HD, and don't even know where my OS discs are - because you simply don't have to do this stuff. If that makes me an idiot, I guess I'm an idiot, but I'm an idiot who isn't wasting his time reformatting his computer.

^ if you had to go through what I did in fixing macs, youd be mad too.

I actually have an iphone, I think its a great product, I dont hate on apple specifically, I hate on the computers.

so lets say you have your macbook,

you find a windows laptop, same battery life, same performance, same dimensions, same everything,

and you install OSX on it,

would you still buy the mac?

also apple warranty is the devil itself, another reason why were moving away from macs, they always try and get out of it.

Yes - and not because I'm just a raving moron who can only shop at the Apple store.

Even if you could find an identical laptop, which I haven't... Installing OSX on a PC defeats a good portion of the reason to have a Mac - the seamless integration of hardware and software. While I realize many PCs can run OSX, I believe one of the keys to the stability of the Macs is simply the small variety of hardware they have to write drivers for. When you start installing OSX on a set of hardware they haven't specifically developed for, you are getting a compromise at best.

I have only had to warranty one product ever but they were phenomenal to deal with, I can complain about absolutely anything, but there isn't much negative to say about my experience with Apple.

I grew up with Macs, the Richmond school district was all Mac. Believe me, there were plenty of times where they didn't "Just Work". Force quit was my friend.

They may be better now, but so are PC's with Windows 7.

To the OP: If it's an HP machine, it's going to have a lot of their pre-loaded shit on it. Try removing some of that crap, especially if it's stuff that runs in the background.

GLOW 01-27-2012 10:49 AM

different strokes for different folks. i'm die hard PC but i worked with a couple of engineers that were die hard PC and had since been converted to Mac because it better suits their purposes. it surprised me at first but if it helps you do what you do more power to you.

the hardware is identical, what seamles integration are you talking about?

having a Mac only to be installing microsoft office on it anyway?

you said it yourself, if the hardware was the EXACT same, and you can install OSX without any "seamless problems" as you say,

you would still buy an apple.

thus, I can call you an idiot, and an apple hipster.

Because you have yet to give one good reason as to why apple should be preferred to PC, yet you keep going on about how it is better.

identical hardware + osx = a mac without the cool looks,

if your argument boils down to "i like the look" then il still call you an idiot

lowside67 01-27-2012 11:26 AM

You are conveniently sidestepping the point that there is no laptop available that has 100% identical hardware to a Macbook Pro making your whole question a pointless thought experiment. If you could find me an IDENTICAL product that had all the same benefits as a Macbook Pro including warranty treatment for less money, of course I'd buy it, but the point is that a "similar" PC laptop is not the SAME.

Mark

Psykopathik 01-27-2012 11:29 AM

y'all need to shut up and get back on topic.

bloodline129 01-27-2012 11:39 AM

Fkn drag n drop on macs troll troll I hate that crap :P pc ftw lol.
To the op. use tuneup pro and if that can't speed shit up u might as well format

even if you are right, which your not,

is "not similar enough" worth the extra grand?

the fact is,

the OP asked how to make his PC faster, you came in here suggesting he buy a mac, with a troll face.

I failed you, because I thought it was a stupid / retarded troll.

but you were actually being serious because you responded to the fail, which means you werent trolling, if you were trolling you wouldv just taken the fail as it was.

You dont see me going into a mac thread and telling the guy to buy a PC, how dumb is that.

if your hellbent on believing your mac is superior in some way, I will go out of my way to find an identical laptop for you,

but being a mac hipster is just like believing in religion, no matter what kind of proof or evidence one can provide to prove the religion wrong, they will never stop believing

your running an OEM windows... which is ok, but often includes useless apps...

format using a "Different" copy of windows... if your at 8-10% full on a 1TB drive, then something is really wrong..

did you update all drivers?
