Overall, it's an 8/10 experience for me because I'm a fan, but most reviewers gave it a 6 because they hate how it's slow again (all I can say is, fuck blading from AC4/4A).
If you've played Chromehounds, then this game is very similar but adds some speed from the AC series. The customization is endless and actually matters since the three weapon types, Kinetic (rifles, guns), Chemical (HEAT rounds), and Thermal (laser weapons), determine your offensive ability because certain body parts offer emphasis on either KE, CE, or TE defense. If you don't properly balance your defense, then the weapons you're weak to will cut you to pieces.
Gameplay-wise, the series has gone back to its roots a bit. No more constant quick-boosting but there is a high-speed boost for evasion and fighting. There is now a sense of weight with the AC's, and with the urban setting, you have to wall kick buildings like Mega Man to get on top of them. The game also places emphasis on using buildings for cover, since there are enemy weapons that can hit you at super long range. The boost mechanics have also added a kick attack at the end of a boost dash that can kill an enemy AC in one shot if you have the speed for it. The lack of speed is a welcome change since I actually stand a chance in PvP now.
The big problem with this game is that it has quite a difficulty curve in the main story and the subsequent support missions. Unless you can replace the shitty weapons you start with, prepare to get your anus pushed in. There are a few side missions you can do for quick cash, but they're pricey. Even then, you can get fucked up running solo, but you can hire a human mercenary to help you complete missions for a price (I finished the story completely by myself).
In terms of community, you won't get far without a clan since there's an emphasis on group play. Clans fight each other for territory on your world map, and clanmates can help you out on missions. You do have the ability to operate as a mercenary to support clans, but it's not as fun when you're in a clan, having a non-combat Operator providing information about enemies on the map during a territory fight. It's been four days, and there are people hotly contesting areas on the Xbox, and even two clans being massive cocks and forming an alliance. If we had enough bodies for a full clan on the Xbox, I'd gladly found a clan for RS. |
