Oil Change Difference 5w-30, 10w-30 and 10w-40 What are those and the difference? Also if I were to change oil myself which one should I be using for my 07 Civic LX Thanks Guys :smug: |
its just the thickness of the oil and use the oil that matches factory specs |
And which one would that be? Its my first time owning a car, and I bought it certified used. It has about 70,000 on the odometer. Thanks Quote:

call the dealer - give VIN - ask what kind of oil .. |
it should say in your car's oil cap what weight of oil to use |

You can’t be bothered to open a page in a booklet that tells you the proper oil to use to keep your what I would assume is a 10K plus investment running properly? :heckno: |
07 civic will say 5/20 right on the cap. in fact I did 2 Honda oil changes today close to your year and both said 5/20 on the cap. as for oil? I like Chevron, but that's what my shop has barrels of, so it's cheap. If you need to buy oil, go to walmart or lordco or napa or canadian tire and pick the oil with the prettiest container, and PLEASE recycle the container, used filter and used oil in a good way. protip: any shop will take them from you for free, don't throw them anywhere else |
too lazy to open a book... but willing to do an oil change? :rukidding: 5w 20 and remember to buy the oil filter canadian tire mobil 1 syn is on sale. http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows.../EngineOil.jsp |
people! don't pick on him for being too lazy to open a book. for one, he bought used and might not have gotten a book, and for two, no one opens that book (really, you havn't) and give him props for coming here to ask instead of dropping it off at jiffy lube or crappy tire and not learning anything in the mix. sure it says the oil type on the cap, but really, this is a better thread than most on this site |
If its a certified used car from the dealer, then its supposed to have the owners manual with it. It is 5/20 and takes 4.2 liters when the filter is changed too Posted via RS Mobile |
well if ur car starts out with 5w30 and as it gets older n u get more KMs on it u can either switch to 5w30 synth or 5w40 usually ppl put thicker oil at around 180 000 cuz of valve noise reg oil the molecules are big and small synth oil molecules are all small so they lube better (they get into smaller holes n cracks) some ppl go for 10w40 5w30 and 10w30 r the same the only diff is at cold start up, wen engine is cold the oil is at a 10 or 5 weight wen engine is at operating temp its at a 30 weight so wen ur car is at 90-100 degrees C its the same 30 weight so in my point of view 5w40 is solid for high mileage engines |
Like everybody else, use 5w20. I use mobil 1 and we drive the same car. No problems on my end. |
You can't go wrong with owners manual. |
This post is from February, I am pretty sure he got his oil changed by now. |

i like royal purple oil from lordco for all my Honda's oops sorry didnt see this threads dead it was bumped up top??? |
come to my shop bro i'll set you up full system flush to get rid of the build up full synthetic 5/20 fram filter cabin air filter injector cleaning coolant swap power steering transmission flush everything you "need". time to bankroll on a noob =D. but seriously just pop the hood and look on the cap. |
Sorry to crash the thread, but does anyone use the 10/30-40 in the summer then switch to the 5/30 in the winter? |
IMO with the weather we get in vancouver, it wouldnt make a difference. I've heard only good things of using thicker oil when the car is burning oil though. |
