Ever lie on your resume and had it go through a background check?
So.. in short I applied for a job..went through all the rounds of interviews and was offered the job. I accepted it. (nothing has been signed yet)
this is a multinational company and they do a background check of your resume, driver's abstract and what not.
The issue is that i somewhat tweaked my resume. Extended some of the dates of how long i worked places, job duties and position falsified.
This background check goes back 7 years and they asked for my SIN... and they get a third party company to do this check.
right now.. im pretty scared to see what happens next.
im just curious if anyone has had their resume go through a background check with some tweaked info.
also does anyone know what the employer sees on this background check?
Just how "tweaked" is it? If you added a couple months here and there, that's something that could be passed off as "ah, I forgot the exact dates". Position could be something like "well, that's what they called it there - even the janitors had the title 'CEO'".
All the same... failed for lying on your resume.

yeah i know.. fail on my part. Trust me i'm a nervous wreck right now waiting for the results.
Did they offer your the job because of your resume or because you nailed the interviews, impressed them as a person?
Sorry, but no sympathy for you because lying is lack of integrity and that is a big no-no in my books.
Background checks are different for different companies. Most do criminal check and also look for bankruptcy issues. Most companies will call your previous employers before they hire you.

I hope you don't get this job. Your kind of people are the downfall of this world!

its just that sometimes you send out resume after resume and don't ever get a response.. because you think your resume is lacking. You say to yourself.. if only the company got to meet me they'd know i could do the job. and basically that's what happen. and this job is like my dream job. everything i could hope for in a career.
I mean i just didn't want them to see the gaps in my resume when i was unemployed. and that my job title sounds like crap.
im being honest. this is tearing my conscience apart. i've gone ahead and booked an appointment to donate blood so i don't feel like such a horrible person..

If it was a retail job or a fast food chain, you'll pass by just fine. But you're doing this for your dream job? A job that could land you a career? Cmon man you should know better. I know its too late to change anything now, most you can do now is to think up of an escape route so they don't take your "faking" too seriously. Depending on the type of industry you work at, IT for example, the word spreads fast... If they don't catch you, consider yourself a VERY VERY lucky man... so lucky in fact, that your luck should be passed on to someone who deserves it more...

Sp3cial K don't read any further if you don't want to know the truth.
If it was an HR dept. doing the background check, I would say you may have a chance to slip in. However, as you stated it is a 3rd party doing the check, spend the rest of your weekend revising your resume to state the accurate information and start applying for other positions. The process has already started so you can't even save face by withdrawing your application.
I use 3rd party companies to check out final candidates and I can assure you they are very thorough. Even though we ask for highest level education (ie MBA) they will still provide information on other degrees.
For previous employers they don't contact just one person, they contact multiple people.
If they call you out for your lies, do not make excuses. Be humble and explain you realize you were wrong and you have since corrected your resume. Thank them for their time and consider it a life lesson.
People talk to others in the same industry. I talk to others and we share horror stories about candidates. (without names)
Fucking moron. I hope this 3rd party company does a thorough check and catch you on this. There are a lot of other honest candidates out there who are at a disadvantage just because of fuckers like you and dumbass HR department not properly checking references. Making your resume a little more fancy with wording is fine, but tweaking the dates? Whatever this multinational company is, I feel sorry for them if they end up hiring a pussy like you.
yes.. i'm going to lie on my resume to work for a fortune 50 company.. oh wait... sorry, I lied, i'm going to donate 50 dollars to the temple to "off set" my wrong doing... totally lol on ur donating blood.
To be honest, nothing is worse when they use a 3rd party company like BackCheck to check your record and you'll be really screwed. if you ever go work for a fortune 50 company and you're caught, good luck ever going to apply again.
Yes, it's a tough lesson learned and hopefully this would be a lesson to you in not just your work but in life in general.

reminds me of the episode of seinfeld where george lies to his ex-in-laws that he has a house in the hamptons and everyone plays chicken to see who breaks first and exposes the lie
lol you gotta fucking do what you gotta fucking do dude. if you really wanted this job that bad and you had no clue what else to do, im pretty sure the majority of people would lie as well.
if u got it you got it. if u didnt get a phone call back. thats when u know that you didnt get the job. lol its ok to lie on your resume. as long as you do a good job that you apply for imo.
Lie all you want, but more companies are doing a better background check because of this.
The way I see it, I don't want to put my mind through all that stress of remembering my lies, because sooner than later - it's going to catch up and the lies going to unfold.
Being honest, it comes out naturally. And if the industry is tight-knit...good luck.

Meh, I think whatever needed to be said has been said. If he got the job, people will say he got lucky and if he didn't, people will say he deserved it.
