CBC Market Place

Was surfing around and checking news when I found this
Marketplace | Canada's Consumer Watchdog: We've Got Your Back
This lady goes around busting companies that essentially try to scam the consumer.. some really interesting ones like:

Cold FX
-Branded as product of Canada but is made in China
-Tests show the drug essentially has no effect on preventing/curing a cold
What FX? - Marketplace

Food labeling
-Companies using misleading words such as cultured celery extract, which is a nitrite by another name..
Lousy Labels: Health Hype - Marketplace

TheKingdom2000 03-03-2012 05:36 PM

You can watch full episodes online which is great. limited commercials too!

Thanks

Both of those are essentially just bad science/corporate science. It's a shame people don't have the common sense to know that without a TV network having to spoon feed it to them.

When The Repairman Knocks - Marketplace

My thoughts exactly... This is all common sense stuff. They should do an episode on something useful to people, and has common misconceptions, such as the bad science used to blame fat or cholesterol for disease, or an episode on Liptor

MG1 03-03-2012 06:55 PM

ColdFX is made from cheap ginseng, yes?

PGX is made from stuff that goes into Japanese konnyaku/shirataki.

BTW, Marketplace has been on CBC forever.

Gridlock 03-03-2012 07:16 PM

I used to watch that show all the time. I watched the ep recently where they profiled some of Transglobe's worst housing disasters, which was entertaining.

Their annual mechanic check ups are good too.

That's a good reason to never half-ass a job. You never know who might be recording.

Although I'm always worried that the one day that I make a mistake will be the one day that I will be recorded.

Likewise, I can rig something that may look simple, but will screw up most, if not all, home theater/computer techs.

Edit: And after watching it, what is up with these disgusting guys pissing in the garage/in cups? Just ask to use the bathroom. Most people will let you.

StylinRed 03-03-2012 08:04 PM

coldfx is made in china?! wtf

never bought it but my aunt buys a tonne of that shit lol

SkinnyPupp 03-03-2012 08:07 PM

There's nothing inherently wrong with sourcing stuff from China. They can make good stuff just as much as they can make crap.

the thing is that its labelled as "Proudly Canadian" when its only bottled in Canada, has a Canadian Icon promoting it... what is so "Canadian" about it? the creator isnt even Canadian.. (her accent isnt, maybe she has her citizenship??)

Gnomes 03-04-2012 06:58 AM

I love watching some consumer awareness programming. There's also Steele on your side
CTV British Columbia | On Your Side - Breaking News, BC News, Vancouver, B.C., Sports, Entertainment, Traffic, Weather, Contests

(Although I do like Olsen more)

winson604 03-04-2012 10:47 AM

Been watching this show for a long time and it really is quite interesting seeing some of the shit they tell you. Some are common sense but some blow you away.

FerrariEnzo 03-04-2012 11:00 AM

wish they would do it here in vancouver, so you know which companies to stay away from... but its all done in ON..

tool001 03-04-2012 12:39 PM

lol @ Cold FX ads on CBC almost everyday..

i don't know but somehow feel its up to the government to bring in legislation against labeling of products in general.

my father was a pharmacists. told me during cold/flu season, 25% business comes from cold/flu medicine. but all of them are just for just placebo affect.

I think I can see who's a scammer and who missed it but that's a tough situation too. I think it is best described by this comment left:

i'm watching this and i can't help but side with some of the repairmen... especially about the toilet. first, the guys are coming in expecting a problem, not someone changing it on purpose. why would you "expect" a toilet chain to be too tight? in the life of a toilet, when would that ever occur? if I went to a house for an issue like that i would expect the whole mechanism is faulty not that someone changed it on purpose.
I could also see a plumber changing the hose gasket for the sink and maybe putting some teflon tape on it as well. reason: why else would the connection become loose? at least this simple change would stop the leak from reoccurring...

they're not placebo...they do help with symptoms (fever, congestion, wet/dry coughs) but everyone overexaggerates their effectiveness cause the common cold/flu are all self-limiting by nature...

but they miss diagnose the problem (even on purpose) they just want to make commission by selling something... like those garage repairmen... the last few knew what the problem is but insisted on buying this and while the "owner" stepped away they fix the minor problem and continue on with the install of the new product..

Sure not all repairmen are bad, there a few shown in the video... they go in and out in 30mins or less... they bill for that time... heck thats good honest repairmen that im happy to call...

Anyone know where that guy who got jail time for selling glasses for really cheap.. the end of the video said that hes moving to BC...

LuHua 03-06-2012 11:28 AM

Ahaha, that garage door opener repairman bit is something I can relate too. But honestly, replacing the board is the last thing that'd you'd usually want to suggest. Most people would consider buying new past a certain point, and the board is something like $170 iirc not including labour. A new machine's like what, a touch past $200? Not to mention that most problems take under 10 minutes to fix...
