Anyone have any idea what material most OEM parts are made out of???

Hey guys,

Anyone have any idea what material most OEM parts are made out of???

Sorry for the rather dumb question but I'm pretty curious about this and I can't find the answer anywhere.
From what I've gathered the three main materials are carbon fiber, fiberglass, and poly urethane.
Can anyone fill me in?
I'm pretty new to RS btw haha.

It's probably important to say what part you are referring to....

I don't see any OEM thermostats or alternators made of carbon fiber or fiberglass.

What parts are you looking for? And for your information, most parts won't be made out of carbon fiber....

gars 03-05-2012 06:03 PM

well, to start off with, I don't think any OEM parts would be made of fibreglass...

BillyBishop 03-05-2012 06:06 PM

In many cases, the same materials most aftermarket parts are made of...

If you're referring to interior parts, I'd say mainly PVC (and maybe PET?) plastic.

For mechanical parts and body, I'd say different grades of aluminum, steel, and other alloys as they see fit.

Depends on the car, if it's an import, the bodies are usually made from already rusting metal.

Timstah 03-05-2012 08:06 PM

its common knowledge that all OEM parts are made from kryptonite

That's pretty hard to believe.... otherwise Superman would have a pretty tough time even walking down the street.

I thought you would know since you are made in Japan :troll:

LOTS of cars have fibreglass panels, hoods and trunks.
