Legal retrofit available for 06 Altima?

Long story short, i got a fixit ticket for HID's and want to got legit, where can i find a street legal HID retrofit.

any ideas where to buy one?

!Aznboi128 03-20-2012 08:15 AM

any retro fit wont be legal.....

as legal as you CAN get is buying a set of projectors and slap them in the car, if you need help with that just give me a pm.

LenovoTurbo 03-20-2012 08:21 AM

There is no "street legal" retrofit. Any modifications to the headlight is illegal.

However, there's less chance getting caught by retrofitting other OEM/HID projectors. If you do get caught with a HID projector retrofit, you may still receive a ticket, or worse a VI.

You can find projectors on The Retrofit Source. There are plug and play projectors that you can install yourself that does not require any cutting such as the Mini D2S or Mini H1.

All HID retrofits are illegal in North America and EU.

The only retrofits that are legal are ones seal beam replacements that are used in commercial vehicles.. eg the ones that are used in the newer Coast Mountain Buses / dump trucks you see on Highway 1/ Port Mann construction sites, since all of those are of the same design and bulb / lights are 1 unit, it can be interchanged.

Yup, these guys are all correct. But retrofit lights will look nearest to OE, as opposed to sticking HIDs in halogen housings. Its really easy to tell whats properly done and whats a cheap 1000000000K kit. The bad glare is an easy giveaway. Super annoying at night.

Psykopathik 03-21-2012 07:56 AM

maybe im confusing you guys? I'm looking for a full headlight with HID not a ebay kit to put in. does this exist? maybe time to buy another car?

anyways thanks for the input guys

If I understand correctly anything other than what came with your car/not from factory is illegal

i understand

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2995041_n.jpg

you want a headlight like mine, (above) where theres a tsx projector inside the regular headlight housing, aka retrofit.

it's not easy to do for tsx but if you using the mini h1 its quite simple. I've done it for couple of civics a g20 and couple of accords, looks great good visibility and awesome cut-off.

and when you say "full headlight" those are like ebay aftermarket headlights, don't most of those are plastic projectors with horrible cut-off and output so dont even bother

approx how much does that cost AznBoi? Using a shop, not DIY.

!Aznboi128 03-21-2012 10:06 AM

^ i dont know any shop that does it, I did it for my friends and I dont charge all that much for them. but diy isnt that hard and I often suggest people to give it a shot

JHatta 03-21-2012 10:19 AM

^you have a good diy thread to review? Thanks

!Aznboi128 03-21-2012 10:28 AM

check out hidplanet.com

make sure you search for mini h1 (easiest way to do it)

fyi

THIS IS ILLEGAL!

JHatta 03-21-2012 10:34 AM

yeah i know, thanks.

someone fitted HIDs on a car I bought, want to check to see if it was done correctly.

!Aznboi128 03-21-2012 10:39 AM

i hope its not one that I did LOL

godwin 03-21-2012 11:25 AM

If you car comes with halogen bulbs.. you can't replacement it with anything without a filament (ala HID).. that's the law

If you want HID, you need another car.

Yes it exists, it's called a retrofit. It involves baking open your headlight and putting in a projector. But remember, any modifications to the headlight is illegal.

If you want to be 100% legal based on its headlights, then yes buy a another car. :rukidding:

If your car has HID as a factory option you may be able to purchase the entire set up though. I am assuming it would be legal, but could be wrong. Doubt they could prove it though.

godwin 03-21-2012 08:20 PM

There are certain things that are cost prohibitive eg leveling sensors that are built in the axle.

The build code is usually in the VIN or on the car somewhere.

They don't have to prove to give you a VI.

For those ones you are correct, but a lot of cars do not have self leveling headlights. My TL doesn't. Also as far as i know the self leveling system just adjusts the height based on if weight is put into the trunk or going over bumps. If your car did come with the autolevel the headlamps could still be installed and aimed correctly but obviously the leveling part would not function.

The police would not be able to tell from the VIN if your car had halogen or HID from the factory. If your car did come with the autolevel they could still be installed and aimed correctly but obviously the leveling part would not function.

You are certainly right on the cost part, depending where you buy the lamps from.

Oh man, I would like to retrofit my headlights as well. I'm probably blinding people at times as well :(

godwin 03-24-2012 01:56 AM

AFAIK self level sensors should be present in most cars that are also sold in the EU as it is a EU directive.

They tell by the build list and code that is usually somewhere in the car eg underneath the passenger seats.

In the end, the Police don't have to be able to tell from VIN etc.. they just have to have a suspicion they can give you a VI and let the inspection place sort it out. You are still out $100.

The onus is on the driver to prove that his lights are legal.. not the police to prove that it is illegal... It is possible for the police to send a car stock from factory with HID for a VI.

Long answer short: if HIDs were available as a *factory option* for the Altima, you can swap in the *factory fixtures* for that car, and be legal. *Anything* else is illegal in BC.

I know this too well.

"well i have no good reason for pulling this guy over so I'll make up some bullshit."

seriously, how hard is it to say, "Just checking things out. Have a nice day, Sir"

godwin 03-27-2012 12:57 PM

Not really.. there had been too many cases drivers brought along their MVA and arguing with the cops on spot.. The cops just enforce the law.. they leave the judging to the designated inspection shop.
