i mean, good for them if they're making money off football, but when the athletics department is more well known than the research taking place at a university... i don't think it can be called a university anymore

A bit OT and I know I'm in small company when I say I find it quite scary that the general population idolizes athletes/coaches/celeberties more than they do teachers/scientists/doctors/entrepreneurs/parents/etc. Every time I see these sports stadiums filled with fans I'm reminded of the Roman Colosseum and their gladiator death matches.

It's a business plain and simple. The big joke of it is a lot of these players don't even just much money and struggle to survive sometimes. That's why you see these college players taking money and all that.

Just because there is more hype about their sports program doesn't mean their academic program is lacking.

Sports and entertainment always get priority in regards to media attention and publicity, imo.

I'm sure there is tons of research going on and for all we know the University of Tennessee has the best research program in regards to monkeys and reading?
But, who cares about that?

And i'm sure some of their profits get distributed to help out around the school.

my dad told me that when he was in U of I most of the money from his scholarship went to sports progam & most of the time they need to get ppl to watch the games since the team is not doing too well

this was all back in the 70s
